I am a 50 year old graduate student. I can read complex textbooks, but that doesn't mean I want to. This book is perfect for the young and the old who know nothing about raising chickens. The author seemed to anticipate my every question. I learned which chickens to purchase, what supplies they'll need and how much I can anticipate spending. The author addresses everything from chicken psychology to terms we use which can be traced to our feathered friends. I also found it humorous. I bought a copy for me and another for my friend who starting raising chickens as a project with her daughter. It will be as beneficial for her 8-year old as it was for me. I finished the book this morning and now feel confident to order the necessary supplies for my soon-to-be new pet hens.

Your Chickens is an excellent guide for youngsters getting started on such a project. The author's use of "You" draws the reader into the action and involves him/her in the process. The language and sentence structure are at a level that's easily understood, without talking down the child. And the text provides much background information without being overwhelming. The illustrations are invaluable showing at a glance each concept that's written. A young person contemplating raising chickens comes away with the feeling the he/she is definitely up to the challenge. I highly recommend this book.

Living on a small farm, my eight-year old grandson, provides care to the chickens. He is planning to expand his flock. His understanding of types of layeers, breeds of chickens, and proper care has been developed with the help of Your chickkens. It is written to chhildren in such a way that they understand and value this wonderful chore.I recommend this book for all young kids, those living on farms and for those who can benefit from a peek into farm life.

We got this for my son because we are getting chickens for the first time this spring. We all have a lot to learn and he loves reading it to us. He is 7 but reads on a 4th grade level. There are so words he does not know and we help him with those. We only plan to get eggs from the chickens, not show them. But it has information from picking your chicks to housing to caring for them. This is a really great informational book.

The book is kid friendly, but not dumbed down. After I bought this book used on Amazon, I found 10 pages mis-printed and blank. When I asked Storey Publishing for possible photocopies of the pages, they sent me a brand-new book. I will look for Storey books more often from now on. They've always been generous to the 4-H community, and produced good work, but now I know they also stand behind their work!

Loved this book. Good for children or adult beginners. Lots of good information for all. Purchased for my granddaughter who is in 4H and will be raising her first flock of chicks this spring. My daughter said my granddaughter read it straight through then read it again.

I don't have chickens yet, this was my first info book. It is a children's book and I loved that about it. It is not full of extraneous information, and it defines the chicken specific words. It is fast to read and a really good introduction to chickens. I don't expect it would be useful to someone who already knows about chickens. It was very helpful to me, and I am moving on the the next level.

I have just bought my fifth copy of this because I keep giving them to my friends with chickens. I've had chickens for about twenty years now and still use this as a reference. Excellent!

I am a fan of Dr. Gray, his podcast gives great advice and cuts through the BS to make sure you totally understand how the interview process works. He explains things that would keep you up at night such as, "why didn't I get an interview?"The 3 mock interviews he gives aways as audio recording is worth way more than the price of the book alone. I think if you really want to demistify the process of the Medical School interview, this is the book to check out. 2 Thumbs up.

This book has a large variety of questions that truly make you think about what your responses would be on interview day. By reading this book you are challenging yourself to dig a little deeper in to your motivation and reasoning behind becoming a doctor so that you can not only know what to say during the interview, but get to know yourself a little better. I am years away from applying to medical school, but by Reading this book I feel I am a little more prepared than others.

First off I loved the book. My one critique for whatever it's worth is that while the initial chapters offer great advice, at times the background information seemed a bit unnecessary for someone who has reached the point in the process where they are preparing for interviews. By far the most valuable sections to me were the question lists and coaching session reviews of students working on their answers. The book is well worth it just for those sections alone, and I would have liked to see even more of that kind of stuff. The book was a large element of my interview prep for my one and only interview this cycle. It helped me to feel confident in my preparation for interview day, and I think contributed to the fact I will be starting an M.D. program this July! Best of luck to all still in the hunt. You got this, and Dr. Gray's book will definitely help!

Any premed who seriously wants to get into medical school needs to read this book. It took me about three hours to read it from cover to cover, and it’s less than $20, so if you are skeptical then take the risk, you have little to lose and so, so much to gain. Dr. Gray goes through a brief background behind the interview, how to prepare beforehand, how to best present yourself during the interview, and what to do afterward. Every detail of the process is covered in a way that helps you prepare to be uniquely you in your interview and not some robot that’s following a popular script from a google search. He talks about an interview like a first date and that’s how you want to approach it – key highlight stories from your life to keep it interesting, but not scripted or regurgitated facts about yourself. My favorite part of the book is Section III, The Examples. Dr. Gray dedicates about a third of the book to transcripts from real mock interviews he's done where he asks applicants the most common interview questions, gives them feedback to their answers, and then repeats the process again. It's great to see how a very raw answer becomes more polished without losing the essence of the applicant's thoughts. I haven't seen another resource that offers such in-depth and real examples of how to respond to questions like "why do you want to be a doctor?" or "tell me about yourself" or "what's your biggest weakness?" among several others. He also includes a chapter for MMI interviews with a bunch of practice scenarios. On the first day of acceptances this year, I got accepted to an MD/MBA program at my top choice school and this book deserves a lot of credit for my acceptance. I spent most of my three interviews talking about stuff that was non-medicine related that the interviewer and I had in common. Without reading this book I wouldn’t have been able to set myself up for such relaxed, natural interviews and would have panicked if I was asked questions that were unrelated to medical school or my application. This book was the key to my success in those interviews.Again, if you’re serious about nailing your interviews and getting into medical school, buy this book. Also check out Dr. Gray’s other resources, including his other books, The Premed Years podcast, and medicalschoolhq.net. You’ll thank yourself when that acceptance letter comes.

I have been listening to Dr. Ryan's podcasts for a long time. He has the absolute best information in the entire premed world. His advice on the podcasts was one of the only reasons I was able to realize that becoming a physician as an older married man with children was possible. I am going to apply to medical schools in 2017 and purchased this book immediately to start preparing. The content is FANTASTIC!

GET THIS BOOK! Seriously, get especially it! It's great for interviews and prepping for it. Read it beforehand interviews and I would say at least a month before your first interview, you should be done with the book. That way, you could compose your answers based on questions from this book. Don't be too rehearsed but have an idea of how to answer normal interview questions. The best part of this book was the feedback Ryan gave during the mock interviews. It's what i used to prep for my interviews and it really made me see weak points when I tried presenting myself in regards to medicine to friends. Other highlights were the healthcare questions and ethical questions. It's great to see the wide gamut of question Dr. Gray puts into the book and you'll surely benefit. Again, an amazing book! :)

Dr. Gray works incredibly hard to fill an information void for those on the premed path in various different formats. I found his podcasts when searching for MCAT prep tips. I rated this only as 4 stars simply due to the heavy overlap with the information from his podcasts regarding the interview. I think the information is all great; it just won't all be new to you if you are a regular listener. Regardless, I am still quite happy with the book because of the examples given and the feedback provided to each student about their answers. Additionally, there were several times that I came across interview questions that I had never considered before. I am confident that this book, along with the podcasts, have helped me tremendously along my premed journey. Buy this book; you won't be sorry.

Review

"“Far and away the best book on modern Dubai, packed with fascinating insights and offering a sympathetic but balanced account of the city's huge successes--and occasional failures. Krane systematically tackles pretty much every important aspect of Dubai's past and present, with absorbing accounts of the city's history and the personalities and achievements of its charismatic rulers through to vexed contemporary issues such as human-rights abuses and environmental concerns, condensing a vast amount of detail into a compellingly readable roller coaster of a narrative.” ―The Rough Guide to Dubai“Offers a vivid guide to how a Bedouin tribe turned a mud village on a scrap of desert into a glittering city state.” ―Bloomberg News“This landmark work is recommended to those interested in the history, politics, and economics of the Middle East; an excellent choice for anyone who wishes to learn more about Dubai.” ―Library Journal“A fascinating study of a small nation that has taken the ideas of modernization and capitalism to their outer limits.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Examines this small emirate with admirable evenhandedness and good humor . . . Krane also writes movingly of the conditions of the Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi workers who have built Dubai.” ―Financial Times (UK)“The author hits his stride when he assesses Dubai's current ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He proceeds to examine this small emirate with admirable even-handedness and good humor. But Krane also writes movingly of the conditions of the Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi workers who have built Dubai.” ―The Atlantic“The history of a little Emirate's epic transformation, from an impoverished pearling enclave to the shining city on the hill, is revealed in full detail. Jim Krane is a great reporter, whose journalistic credentials are brought to bear in this unique work that is infused with facts, ample history, emotion, and stunning narratives. He leads his audience into the nooks and crannies of the 'unknown' Dubai, to reveal the humanity and intrigue that pulsates beneath the surface. He shows how powerful persons with a global reach collaborated to build an economic gem out of the desert. This is a fast-moving Arabian tale, but very much a modern one; not only laden with facts, it is a guidebook and cautionary tale for other developing nations in their quest to rapidly achieve the Western dream.” ―Justin Dargin, Harvard University, author of Desert Dreams and The Dolphin Project: The Development of a Gulf Gas Initiative“Dubai is fortunate to have as skilled and passionate a chronicler as Jim Krane. The city leaps off these pages with panache, brassiness, splendor, and suffering. There is no better book about Dubai, and there may never be.” ―Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East program at CSIS, author of The Vital Triangle: China, the United States, and the Middle East“How did one of the planet's last unexplored wastelands, for millennia ignored by history, become in just a few short decades the playground of the unimaginably rich? In City of Gold, Jim Krane traces the fascinating and long overlooked history of Dubai, from pirate battles and eccentric British explorers to the glittering spires of a metropolis that emerged from nowhere, in prose as spare and enchanting as a desert fairy tale.” ―James Hider, Middle East correspondent for The Times (London), author of The Spiders of Allah: Travels of an Unbeliever on the Frontline of Holy War“A marvelous book. Beautifully written! Jim Krane has written a fascinating account of a Middle East we rarely get to hear about. Jim Krane's book on Dubai's rise and fall--in this era of global financial crisis--is a cautionary tale for us all.” ―Lourdes Garcia-Navarro, NPR's Middle East correspondent"

This is a well written, concise, very readable and fascinating portrait of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. Although I understand that its sale has been banned in Dubai, it strikes me as a very complimentary/upbeat portrayal of what has been achieved in the desert. Krane does not ignore the social issues such as the poor treatment of labor and lack of political freedom. But the overall judgement is that the Al-Maktoum family has repeatedly taken huge, gutsy bets that have paid off big. We have them to thank for one of the world's most modern, efficient and livable cities -- certainly in this part of the world. This book really hits the mark.

American journalist and former Dubai resident Jim Krane has written perhaps the best introduction yet to Dubai. An overview of the UAE's brief recorded history is preamble to the larger story of how a fishing village that wasn't electrified until 1960 became the regional hub for transport, banking, media and tourism. Krane's near breathlessness in describing the planning and building of one seemingly impossible project after another is tempered in the second half by a more sober reflection on the exploitation of labor, abuse of the environment, and marginalization of the native population.Krane writes well and interviews widely but perhaps his greatest strength is his sensitivity to a textured narrative, of not being satisfied with a simple story, in presenting angles and opinions that are often contradictory. Not only does this make his story richer, but you're never quite sure how he thinks of any of this until the very end. The long-time resident finds himself seduced by Dubai, a city that developed so quickly that it's no longer in the modern age, but "somewhere out in the future."The unstated assumption among Dubai observers seems to be that of most economists, politicians and other social engineers - life is better when you have more money and more stuff. It is therefore the job of those in power to enable people to make and accumulate more. And since Dubai is doing that quite well, it must be a swell place. Thanks to the generosity of the Sheikhs, Emiratis have one of the highest per capita incomes on the planet. They have all the stuff they could ever want, including literacy and higher life expectancy. But where is the benefit of living longer when your life amounts to little more than shopping? When your work is largely meaningless, a government job that is often nothing but a welfare appointment, a title to justify paying you a wage? Where's the benefit in a house full of great stuff when you've lost your culture and identity? When you are a minority in your own country?Krane talks to a 39 year old mother who during her lifetime saw Dubai grow from a town in which boys and girls played together each afternoon in the creek, to a heaving metropolis in which you can't safely walk across the street because of the traffic. Children spend more time indoors in schools and in houses separated by wide roads. People work longer. "Before, life had a taste. Now nothing makes you happy. Before, you could buy one mobile phone and you are happy. Now you buy five mobiles in a year and you're not happy. There is nothing making people happy now."It's not just the Emiratis who are dissatisfied. The laborers building and maintaining the city live in crowded conditions, working long hours in often dangerous jobs for little money, the threat of deportation preventing them from organizing to improve their condition. There are of course many poor people in many countries across the world, and it is true that many laborers make better money in Dubai than they would at home. But what kind of "vision" of development ignores the suffering of so many of its residents? Before the 2009 market collapse Dubai had bank-loads of money, some of which could have been diverted from the latest vanity project to help those who make important contributions to the state and society. Where is the compassion? What kind of vision of the future is this?If Dubai means anything at all, it's a call to start questioning our assumptions. What's wrong with less stuff and a more measured pace of development? Won't compassion for the environment, an equitable division of benefits, and a meaningful personal stake in society and in one's own life make living richer than another hotel, shopping mall, or skyscraper? For a country that's actually trying to do something different, to break out of the present and into something possibly futuristic, look to Bhutan, a small developing country with few resources which measures progress in terms of GDH - Gross Domestic Happiness.#

I started reading this near the end of a trip to Dubai and I wish I had read it earlier. It is an excellent introduction to this city-state and will explain in advance many of the questions that will arise anyway in the course of your travels. For readers who do not plan to travel to Dubai, it provides a good historical and cultural introduction to an important part of the Arab world. Krane does not stint on his criticisms of the government or the royal family, but also acknowledges the progressive and visionary elements of the current leadership. I highly recommend this book if you are planning a trip to the UAE. If you weren't planning to go there, this book will certainly whet your curiosity.

When traveling to a new country for work for an extended period of time, I try to read a book or two that provides some historical and cultural context to the place. It's nice to get some grounding on the place I'm visiting, and I've found this contributes both to my enjoyment of the locale and also my understanding of the people I'm working and interacting with. For the first-timer to Dubai, I don't think you could do much better than this book. The author is clearly fascinated by his subject matter, and brings passion and deep expertise to his writing. Mr. Krane presents Dubai through the eyes of a reporter, providing first-hand interviews from the men and women behind the scenes in Dubai, and presenting several facets of the key aspects of the city. Rather than a puff piece or agenda-driven slash job, the author presents the positives and negatives of Dubai's breakneck development and allows the reader to form their own conclusions at the benefit of his research and commentary. While it's missing the details of Dubai's economic crash, it certainly gives one the grounding to make more sense of Dubai's chances for the future.Aside from a jab or two at former US President GW Bush, which seems a bit hackneyed and trite in 2012, the book was well-researched and unbiased, and managed the difficult task of remaining entertaining rather than reading like a graduate thesis. I was unable to set the book down, and found my evening walks through Dubai complemented by each chapter I read. The only flaw I found was several photographs are mentioned in the acknowledgments, but none appear in the Kindle edition of the book, although they would not have been missed unless one read the end notes. For the casual observer, it's tempting to dismiss Dubai as the "Las Vegas of the Middle East," but Mr. Krane provides a deeper, more nuanced view of this fascinating place. Beneath the shiny buildings there are subtle undercurrents, and I found each chapter of this book provided a welcome exposure to yet another facet of the City of Gold.

great book

This book is a true rarity--a work of serious scholarship, written in a user-friendly, personal, poetic, eminently-readable style. You'd almost be fooled into thinking you were reading a romantic travel narrative, one of those popular memoirs à la "Under the Tuscan Sun" where a naive American goes off and has a life-transforming experience while in a foreign land. But as Dr. Causey relates his tales of the months spent with the Toba Batak in their remote, beautiful homeland in northern Sumatra, learning something about their culture, something about woodcarving, and a LOT about shopping, he also unfolds a series of subtle, complex observations about aesthetics, about colonialism and acquisition, and about the role of tourists / collectors in a market economy and their effect as both destroyers and saviors of traditional culture. Absolutely fascinating stuff, and certainly not just for students of anthropology--this is a book that should be read by art historians as well as by economists, as well as by anyone who simply enjoys a well-written tale of a beautiful place that they've never been...I particularly admire "Hard Bargaining" for the lack of any tang of cultural superiority on Dr. Causey's part--he never assumes that he knows more than the people he's observing, or that since he has a Ph.D., his observations must be considered correct. He went there; he lived, he learned, he shopped; and he thought about it, hard, and critically, comparing the Toba Batak culture to our own, and letting the reader make the judgement calls, not the anthropologist. Very well done!

Like most working stiffs, I save up for a big vacation to some far away land and when it finally happens I get shuffled around from one tourist spot to the next. The culture presents itself for purchase and I buy."Hard Bargaining in Sumatra" isn't just a book by an affable scholar. It immediately took me into the home of a very different family, sat me on a 'fancy mat' and amused me with a narrative by the author to his Toba Batak friends. He told a story for their entertainment that might easily have described my own hapless first experience in an exotic culture. The family's reaction and the unfolding details of their work in the woodcarving-for-tourists trade was a pleasure to read.I was continuously surprised at how clearly Causey expressed complicated, seldom-analyzed notions of place and identity. The relationship between tourist and vacation spot is alive and dynamic in a way I'd never imagined. The author's struggle to learn the skills of the woodcarver gave extra dimension to my understanding of this traditional craft. The friendship between the student/researcher and the teacher/subject made the dynamics of the familial roles and societal obligations disarmingly vivid and personal. The book enriched my understanding of a distant culture to a degree I could never have achieved by hopping a plane and wandering their marketplaces. When I saw a Toba Batak carving at an art museum a few weeks later, I had a wealth of feelings and observations that would never have occurred to me before. For me, reading this book was like the best kind of vacation. I learned a lot, felt a connection to the people and culture, and enjoyed the process.

"What happens when the homeland of one group is also claimed as the vacationland of another group?"This question put by the author rather succinctly sums up a major theme of the book, and perhaps should be a guiding thought for all of us who ever take a vacation...anywhere.Whether we are taking a "package" vacation or just winging it in a new location, we have an impact not only on the place we visit, the feeling of the place, the services it provides, and perhaps most importantly, the ART of the place. Souvenirs...mementos...folk art...all these tokens and totems that come from our vacation spot are evolving to meet our desires. The author handles this idea and others in a very human and sensitive way, inviting us into his experience in Sumatra, Indonesia and filling our minds with the sense of the place: its smells, visuals, sounds, landscape and its people. It is easy to lose oneself in this book as if it were a novel or the travelogue, yet it tackles some very difficult issues without sounding preachy or judgmental. I have always been interested in, and sensitive to the general "sense" of a place. I can be easily spooked by the quality of light or the sight of long shadows in the afternoon. I found Dr. Causey to be a kindred spirit, as he has addressed this feeling (because it is at heart a "feeling") very poetically in his writing about Lake Toba. There are many humourous vignettes within the book, as well as many parables and lessons. It in indeed educational, and educational on a new level-it reaches right into the spaces between ideas and brings into being a hybrid way of looking. It is accessible, informative and heartfelt.I would recommend this book to anyone - it can be read for sheer pleasure. But if you are planning to travel, and would like to get some ideas on developing a very diplomatic and culturally sensitive approach to your new destination, this is most certainly the book for you.I nominate Dr. Causey for Goodwill Ambassador!

Causey is what anthropologists should be. His book is grounded, full of humanity, insightful, surprising, poetic, compassionate and a lovely read. He beautifully describes and explains something profound of a people through times of tremendous social and economic change. An extremely informative and humanistic look at a Sumatran cultural group in the midst of global pressures.

Nipped in the Bud, Not in the Butt: How to Use Mediation to Resolve Conflicts over Animals

About the Author

Debra A. Vey Voda-Hamilton spent 30 years as a practicing litigator, but she is now a full-time mediator and conflict coach for people in disputes over animals. She works both nationwide and internationally. She has far-reaching experience in resolving interpersonal conflicts involving animals, and she is also well-known in the world of purebred dogs as a top breeder and exhibitor of Irish setters and long-haired dachshunds. Debra speaks widely on the topic of how mediation techniques can help people address conflicts without litigation. She has presented at veterinary schools, the American Kennel Club, the American Veterinary Medical Law Association, the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators, the Living With Animals conference, state bar association Animal Law Committee meetings, and animal interest group meetings. Debra also writes a blog for Hamilton Law and Mediation and is a contributor to the Solo Practice University blog and the Canine Chronicle. She has been featured in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, US News and World Report, and the New York Times. As the principal at Hamilton Law and Mediation, PLLC—the nation’s first solo mediation practice dedicated to helping people resolve conflicts over animals—Debra uses alternative dispute resolution to help address disagreements over the family pet during divorce, neighbors’ arguments over a barking dog, and confrontations between clients and veterinarians and other professionals who work with animals. HLM also looks forward to helping animal rights and welfare advocates see the benefit of having a conversation about the best interests of all parties—especially the animals—to resolve animal-related disputes. Debra is admitted to practice law in all New York State courts. She is certified as a mediator and collaborative professional and has worked with various court-based mediation programs in New York City (Queens-Community Mediation Service) and in Westchester and Rockland Counties in New York (Westchester and Rockland Mediation Centers).

This book gives the reader a comprehensive review of what mediation is (and why), how it works, and where to go to find a mediator. It’s easy to read with great examples and metaphors. Debra does a great job at describing how it works. I particularly like her “formula” of “Stop, Drop and Roll,” making it easy to remember the steps of effective conversation (if not easy to do!). If you’re facing a conflict over an animal that you love (or any situation), and you follow Debra’s advice, you’ll find your relationships greatly improved (and conflicts resolved).

By a VeterinarianAs a veterinarian of twenty plus years in practice, I have heard many complaints from individuals (clients and others) who have felt mislead and betrayed by my colleagues concerning the treatment of their beloved four-legged family member and often poor outcomes suffered. Though I have never had a conflict with a client over their pet, I have learned that this is unfortunately not a rare occurrence. I have never heard of any issue involving a dispute between client and veterinarian being satisfactorily resolved. Debra’s book nails some of the most important underlining defects in our culture, in the veterinary medical profession itself (the entrenched methods of dealing with these issues) and legal system which do NOT facilitate conversation, the delegation of responsibility, or any positive resolution in these matters. As is noted throughout her extremely well written and easy to understand text, the author accurately states what is most often left behind is anger, resentment and distrust which will permeate many other similar relationships. For people and their pets, this could mean hesitating or even foregoing future interactions with the veterinary medical profession. In this instance, it is often the beloved pet’s health which is most likely to suffer. On the other side, are often well intentioned veterinary practitioners, who through perhaps inadequate communication skills or unfortunate and unexpected poor treatment outcomes feel victimized by the public (whose interests it is their duty to uphold).Debra’s insight into the belabored court system (that does not recognize companion animals as living beings) and veterinary malpractice insurance structure is uncanny. Both stymie any productive communication between the parties, leaving facts undisclosed, and the voices of all involved unheard. Though mediation might not be a solution in all situations (for example when there is intentional wrongdoing and parties will not come to the table) it should be required as a first step before the filing of any complaint. It makes no sense that insurance companies will not underwrite mediation as part of the constructive settlement of all disputes regarding animals. Veterinarians should be encouraged to sit down and discuss disputes, perhaps resolving misunderstanding and maintaining good relationships with their clients and the public in general. In taking the comments of another reviewer to the next step, “How to Use Mediation to Resolve Conflicts over Animals” should be required reading for all professional Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students and licensed practitioners. Bravo!!

This book really resonated with me. Debra does an excellent job providing a realistic approach to conflicts over pets. When I opened the book , I immediately noticed Debra's passion with regards to animal conflict resolution. She does an excellent job explaining the history of mediation, and the significance of mediation in resolving conflict. Being an arbitrator , I truly agree with the author that alternate dispute methods are the ultimate form of resolving conflict. Debra presents solutions to longstanding problems. I learned new and interesting information because of this book. The examples used by the author were imaginative and striking , and Debra's ability to convey her practice experience impressed me.This is definitely a book that I will remember. Its full of examples that I can use as an arbitrator. For example, I had no clue that the United States created a group of professional mediators called “Commissioners of Conciliation”.The most interesting part of the book was hearing about Debra's cases in pet custody mediation, and the amazing results that were produced for the animal during the mediations.Having been involved in a pet conflict myself, I realize the painful nature of growing through this experience , on a very deep and personal level. Working with someone compassionate and skilled in resolving conflict is essential when trying to create the best solution for the pet. Nothing is more important in the agreement , then doing what is correct for the health and happiness of your beloved animal. There is nothing more important than hiring a professional when dealing with family law, animal law conflicts. Knowing that Debra is an attorney who's practiced in the field , I would safe hiring her to resolve my conflict. I have nothing but great respect for people like Debra who fight for the better treatment of animals in the field of law. It takes a very special, and kind soul to do this.I give this book a 5 star rating. It is an excellent tool for resolving conflict, and for learning about pet custody resolution tactics.

Everyone who has a conflict should read this book! As a professional mediator, I've read a lot of books on alternative dispute resolution and Debra's "Nipped in the Bud, Not in the Butt: How to Use Mediation to Resolve Conflicts Over Animals" is one of the best. It's straightforward and easy-to-read with tons of real-life examples that will resonate with most people. Debra breaks down the mediation process in a simple, understandable way that makes sense and is valuable to know, irrespective of whether or not a dispute is related to animals. If parties in conflict read this book before hiring attorneys, we'd have a lot less litigation and much happier animals!

Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail: Linking People With Nature by Footpath Along Lake Superior's North Shore

The Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail details over 296 miles of footpath on the North Shore of Lake Superior from Jay Cooke State Park near Duluth, MN. to the Canadian border. Mile-by-mile descriptions lead the casual hiker or ardent backpacker through hardwood forests of birch and maple, and into boreal forests of spruce, pine and fir with amazing cascading rivers and serene lakes and ponds. This landscape, once carved by ancient glaciers, is dominated by Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. The Superior Hiking Trail is largely on the ridgeline overlooking Lake Superior, which provides great views and some of the most impressive scenery in the Midwest. The Guide can be used for both day hikes and backpacking. Day hikes from trailhead to trailhead are 5-11 miles in length.

The trail is so well marked that it would be nearly impossible to lose the way (even at night), but the guidebook is an indispensable resource for trailhead parking, water supplies and campsites. Everything you want to know about the trail is in this book.A word of caution - the SHT has been changing rapidly with new section openings and campsites. Make sure you have the most recent version or the section of trail you plan to hike may not be in your guidebook.

A really wonderful guide, which gives useful tips on how to access the trail (which roads to use, where you can park), lengths of sections, and highlights. I especially like the narrative, which often describes what kind of trees to look forward to viewing. It lacks details on the sections (especially elevation details), so I'd recommend an accompanying trail map for any lengthy journey.

Good information but I would give it 5 stars if it was written in both direction. If heading north to south it makes it very difficult to plan and follow. It's doable but requires much more work. Overall the decriptions, trail info and tidbits are excellent and it was very beneficial during our hike.

This is a must have if you are planning a hike on the SHT. This gives you great advice on parking, routes, what you will see and how to get there. Highly recommended!

It provides parking information, trail and campsite distances, and descriptions of each trail section (both terrain and even some history). They also offer some planning tips if you are doing an extended length trip (mailing spots, distances to hike into towns, shuttle info, etc.). I'm so glad they offer a Kindle version - it makes carrying this so much lighter!

Very detailed Trail instructions

I'm just now reading this book and haven't yet used it in the field. I wish it was patterned more like the Appalachian trail guide book with information on total milages, tips on how and where to resupply, and information on how to do an unsupported trip from the airport. I'll re-review it after I use this book to hike the trail.

Great trail book. Currently planning a backpacking trip, and this has details everything about the trail (campsites, water sources, trail descriptions etc.) all broken down into 5-15 mile chunks (trail head to trail head).
