I purchased this book as a newbie shell collector and have been using it non-stop to identify the seashells that I've collected over the past 35 years. Its easy to use!

You will love this book if you spend any time on the beaches of Sanibel, or Jamaica, or Curacao, or Barbados..... Yes, it is complete and the system Audobon uses is great for most of us who want to know what we just picked up. Enjoy!

It is an Audubon and we like the way they put pictures in the front for quick identification and then list reference pages so you can look to the back for the information. Quick delivery with Amazon Prime and satisfactorily packaged.

I got this for a friend, who acquired a lot of unlabeled seashells at an estate sale and wanted to identify them. She said that she sat up all night reading it, as she was fascinated by the descriptions of the animals the shells came from. She was able to identify almost all of her shells, except for one or two which may have been from other parts of the world. This book covers saltwater mollusks of both coasts of North America north of Mexico, identifies many Caribbean shells which are found in Florida. Might be more useful if it covered freshwater mollusks, i.e. from the Great Lakes.

These National Audubon Society Field Guides are the best reference books available, even though they were published years ago. We have several in the series, but not this one for shells. I thought it was a good addition to our collection since we occasionally have the opportunity to go the beach in Florida, and find it fun to collect shells.

Great field guide for anyone who loves sea shells and shelling like I do. I plan on taking it with me to our next beach trip. I have jars and jars of shells I have collected so this book is perfect for me.

Book is Great! Perfect to take with you anywhere on any coast of North America if you are hunting for seashells. Nice and small size. Compact. Very thick book packed with so many seashells all found throughout North America. Full color, crisp and clear photographs with accompanying information for each and every shell. I would strongly advise to take this guide along with you when you go shelling. It is very helpful. It is a field guide that shows you clearly what you are looking for, where to find it, or what you have found. It explains everything-how deep in the water, where on the beach, and how large it grows. Just a perfect guide. The best guide there is I think.

My five year old loves seashells, and beachcombing. The pictures are very clear, and the organization based on shape is a nice touch. It's also nice because it's focused on N American shells, so we don't have to flipped through too many pages to identify our shells.

Sometimes reading a bio, you get a bit mixed up between the man and the book. Obviously the man is in the book to some extent, but also what is not said is important too. Ian "beefy" Botham is a legend, purely because of what he did at Headingly in 1981, hitting probably the greatest innings in the history of cricket. You can't top that, and of course he never did, and so there is some tragedy in this tale too. It was soon after this that Beefy tweaked his back in a county game and was never really the same again. He was also English captain way too early, which he admits here, and after a turbulent year in charge was put on probabitionary status and then resigned before the Headingly test. The tragedy is that Botham's career can really be dividid between "before the English captaincy", a tale of ever stupendous feats with ball and bat, and "after the captaincy" which contains Headingly, the peak of his career, and then a number of injuries and scandals, resigning from his county and becoming more of a chariy celebrity than a sportsman. The tragedy is that Botham could have been England's Allan Border, captaining his country's side for many years and racking up records in the meantime. Botham never retained the longevity to rack up records and whilst he has been voted England's cricketer of the century, this is purely on the basis of the legendary performances he put in at his peak, which was in fact quite shortlived, 1978-1981. The book reads obviously reads like this too. Chronicalling his early childhood adventures, his dominance in school cricket, particularly with the throwing the cricket ball competition (one I remember competing in with fondness during some of my schooling in the olde country, Scotland - yes they have cricket pitches up there too, seldom used mind you....) and moving on to his apprecenticeship at Lords, of all places, its a real fun honest read. Later Botham moves to Somerset, rooms with a certain Vivian Richards, gets married and embarks on a Boys Own tale of heroics on the pitch and in the club bar. Botham writes with fondness of his mentor Brian Close, a forty plus gnarling menace on a cricket pitch and, apparently, the world's most dangerous driver. It was Uncle Brian that told him not to accept the England captaincy (how right he was). In fact a lot of Botham's decline can put to his separation from Close after he retired and lost direct influence over Beefy.Scandal did seem to follow Beefy in his career and where there is smoke there is fire so lets go through it. Firstly the booze. Like many an athlete I think Botham moved on from drinking in celebration to becoming close to alchoholism. I have read George Best's book and I don't think Botham was on that level but what is not admitted here is that perhaps his drinking both shortened his career and delayed his recovery from the increasing number of injuries. Let's just say I don't think Beefy is totally honest in the book about the extent of his drinking, but it is alluded to between the lines. Secondly the marijuana. Bizarrely for an English cricketer, Botham was dogged by this allegation throughout his career. As I have said, where there is smoke there is fire. He admits in the book he was caught in possession of a small amount of wacky baccy in his own home. He rather disingeniously claims that whilst he did sometimes smoke, this particular amount was someone else's, there by accident. When did Beefy start smoking this stuff and how often? He never really gets into this in the book. Thirdly the affairs. He admits to one affair late in the book, and claims the rest of the headlines were money grabbing starlets. Do we believe this - I guess its up to the reader. But this is the exact problem with book. After about 1982/3 in telling the story our hero becomes increasingly defensive, like a boy in the headmasters office explaining himself. It's always it was this newspaper's fault, or it was this injury, or those selectors. What it is really is the second half decline of a once glorious career. Perhaps aspiring sportsmen should read this book as a cautionary tale as the saddest thing in this book is perhaps unintentional, and that is the photographs which when studied closely detail an astonishing decline of Botham's physical condition from 1981-1987, despite the charity walks, which I put down to his lifestyle.Perhaps I am sniping too much here. Botham is still a legend, and has done much for the game and charity after his retirement, and is a patriotic Englishman. The second half of the book is just not as good as the first, a mirror of his career.

I EMIGRATED TO THE USA IN MAY 1981, THE AGE BEFORE THE INTERNET, AND MISSED THE DETAILS OF BEEFY'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT YEAR AND SUBSEQUENT YEARS. SCORES WERE 3 DAYS OLD ,IF ANYONE EVEN CARED. IT WAS VERY FRUSTRATING TO KNOW SOMETHING BIG WAS HAPPENING IN THE CRICKETING WORLD AND NOT BE ABLE TO SHARE IN IT. THIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY FILLS IN THE DETAILS AND MORE. AN AMAZING TALENT WITH BAT AND BALL, NOT SO AMAZING TALENT OFF THE FIELD. HIS CONSTANT WAR WITH THE STUFFY CRICKETING ESTABLISHMENT AND HIS MOSTLY HARMLESS CLUBBING AND BOOZING ESCAPADES INEVITABLY GAVE THE GUTTER PRESS PLENTY OF ROOM FOR THE KIND OF SALACIOUS STORIES THEY ARE FAMOUS FOR. HIS WIFE MUST BE ONE HECK OF A LADY, A CLASS ACT WHO NEVER BIT BACK AT THE PRESS OR HER HUSBAND. I HAD NO IDEA OF THE DEPTH OF IAN'S CHARITABLE WORKS. A COMMON MAN WITH AN UNCOMMON TALENT, A 'WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET' KIND OF A GUY. AN ALL TOGETHER GOOD READ FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN CRICKET AND ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS WHO PLAYED IT!

Ian Botham was one of my favourite cricketers when growing up. It's a pity we didn't see much of him in India but was still hoping to hear more about his relationship and views on some of his contemporaries from my country, which were missing. It was my very first book on kindle and now cannot even think of buying a physical book.

A very honest book, beefy doesn't avoid mentioning his shortcomings and owning up to his mistakes, a fantastic read about a true national treasure .

Review

Praise for American Buffalo“This is some of the best writing on our great national beast since George Catlin—and that was in 1841. A real triumph.”—Bill McKibben, author of The Bill McKibben Reader“This is a big-game hunting story like no other: Steven Rinella is in search of an animal, quite literally. But also historically, existentially, and maybe even spiritually. Follow him on this curious armed quest—and, like him, you will quickly find yourself immersed in the fate of our mightiest and most talismanic beast.”—Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder “Steven Rinella’s American Buffalo is a boldly original and ultimately refreshing book. It is also fearsome and occasionally frightening, and one wonders if the author is quite mad. There are insights into nature and American history here that will be totally unfamiliar to the reader.”—Jim Harrison, author of Returning to Earth and Legends of the Fall“Here is one of those rare books that make you feel larger, smarter, and entirely exhilarated for having read them. Steven Rinella's lens on the world is entirely his own, as is his grace on the page. American Buffalo is an achievement through and through.”—Deirdre McNamer, author of Red Rover“Moving and downright funny. . .Rinella writes with authority about the process of turning a living creature into steak, and easily renders an enormous amount of historical and scientific information into a thoroughly engaging narrative.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Here is a wonderful young writer that everyone should know about. Steven Rinella is exciting, adventurous, technically gifted, honest, funny—a great new voice in American nonfiction.” —Ian Frazier, author of Great Plains, On the Rez, and The Fish’s Eye

At one time the American buffalo was the largest land mammal in North America. It was big, it had few predators, and it wandered freely across the continent in huge numbers. Then, of course, man stepped in and the buffalos were almost slaughtered out of existence. Steven Rinella has written a fascinating story about his obsession with the buffalo and the history of the beast. The book is actually two different stories. The first is how the author won a lottery to hunt buffalos in Alaska, tracked them, shot one, butchered it, and then worried about grizzlies coming after the meat. Certainly seems like a legitimate concern to me. The second story is interwoven through the book and is a trek through history helping us to understand the importance of the buffalo to the American West.Mr. Rinella is an experienced outdoorsman and a correspondent for Outside magazine, so he writes with knowledge. His style of writing should make the book a good read for both hunters and non-hunters. Highly recommended. How can you go wrong with a book that opens with a description of buffalo dung?

You know that Diet Dr. Pepper commercial with the lumberjack-looking guy in the flannel shirt that's casually walking through the woods carrying entire tree trunks and hand-landing salmon and then throwing them to grizzly bears? Well, Steven Rinella IS that guy--if that guy could also totally CRUSH you at Jeopardy!!I bought his book, "American Buffalo," primarily b/c I've been buying a lot of free-range, grass-fed bison from Dan O'Brien's Wild Idea Buffalo Company and I thought it would be a good idea to learn some history about the animal. After having read Rinella's book, I now know not only a ton about bison, but also a lot more about the settlement of the western United States and the characters who lived there, the traditional way of life of many Native American tribes, Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Chetaslina/Copper River area, hunting in general, and about current tensions between the cattle industry and conservation groups regarding the reintroduction of wild, free-ranging bison into areas where they were once native.I particularly enjoyed the later chapters where Rinella is successful in hunting a wild buffalo and his account of butchering the animal and transporting it out of the wild. It's a pretty harrowing tale. Lots of adventure. A lot of risk. I can't imagine being alone in grizzly country for days period--much less trying to pack out hundreds of pounds of meat IN THE DARK. Steven Rinella is hardcore and I have a ton of respect for his willingness to suffer for what he believes in. The only thing I didn't like about the book was knowing that I don't think I could ever do the same. Even camping in the campground in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park freaks me out. This guy camped multiple days covered in blood in backcountry grizzly habitat BY HIMSELF not far from the dead bison he was butchering. Then, for good measure, he whitewater rafts his cache of bison meat down the Chetaslina River--also in the dark.Guy's a stud. Read his book. But fair warning you will feel like less of a man after having done so. I have to go do some push-ups now.................

I first became aware of Steven through his tv show MeatEater. I greatly enjoy his intellectual curiosity and thoughtful approach to hunting and eating game animals. This book covers so much ground, documenting the history of the bison and of early native American life and the effects of the westward expansion of white settlement on the populations of both bison and Indians. Interspersed are Steven's personal experiences hunting and killing a wild bison in Alaska. I found the book fascinating.....non-hunters be warned that the harvest of the bison's meat is decribed in respectful detail, I did not find these passages non-appetizing as I am a hunter myself.

Excellent writing by Steven Rinella. A mix of American history, a once in a lifetime hunt, friendship, brotherhood and his quest to fill his freezer with some of the most incredible meat one can procure. I really enjoyed this book and have bought several copies for friends. Steve has been breaking the stereotype of the drunk Bubba shooting out the truck window for a long time and giving readers (and viewers of his Meateater TV show) a look at the real hunting culture we have in America. If you like hunting stories or American history, this book is a must read.

This was a fantastic book. I love Steven's writing style, because it weaves in his own personal narrative to the bigger picture of the history of the animal. I often think about how my own experiences fit into the narrative of larger historical events, so it was fascinating to read this book in that same sort of style. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read about the history of the iconic American buffalo and imagine yourself along side one of the last mountain men as he embeds himself into its story.

I've always felt a intuitive connection to the buffalo as a plains-state immigrant on the East coast. Rinella provides a provocative and deeply researched explanation of why. The buffalo have captured the attention and imagination of North Americans across innumerable generations. If you like Rinella's podcasts, then you'll find a comforting familiarity in his narration in this book. He effectively breaks the main narrative (his hunt of a buffalo) with historical, technical, personal, and otherwise delightfully esoteric digressions.Great for a quick weekend read.

Being familiar with Steve Rinella through his TV show and podcast, I thought I knew what I was in for with this book. I knew he had won a lottery to hunt a buffalo and that this book would be the story of that hunt, entwined with the story of the history of buffalo in North America. I anticipated enjoying it, especially the history bits. I expected, as a non-hunter, to be less than fully engaged in the hunting parts of the story. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I found the whole thing absolutely riveting. Funny, poetic, and exciting. Very highly recommended – one of the best books I read this year.
