I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

When many of us were young, we were heartened by the statement "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step..." And of course being young and American, we saw that step in a positive direction. But what if those first steps were a journey into unspeakable evil that will never be forgotten as long as our histories are written for the most part by decent and civilized women and men? As we learn from "Hitler's First Victims: The Quest for Justice" (by Timothy W. Ryback), an evil journey has to also begin with a few steps. The "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem" and the Holocaust didn't begin with the German invasion of Poland (and later, the Soviet Union) or at the Wansee conference, but much earlier. And we finally have a book to explain how those first few murders, at Dachau in 1933, slowly began the process by means of which Heinrich Himmler and the SS trained and vetted the cadre of men (and a few women) who would go on to murder six million European Jews and millions of other "Untermenschen" between the beginning of Nazi power in Germany in 1933 and the final defeat of the Nazi military machine by the combined allied forces in 1945."Hitler's First Victims" tells a tiny story of a few men from the old Germany who tried to continue a tradition of justice as the Nazis began inventing the horrors of the concentration camps outside the small Bavarian city of Dachau in 1933. It is mainly the story of a German lawyer, Josef Hartinger, a prosecutor in Bavaria who insisted on leading the investigation into the first murders by the SS at the newly created concentration camp outside Dachau during the first half of 1933. Although Hartinger was not successful in prosecuting the SS men who had committed murders within the first six months after the opening of the camp, his meticulous (some would proudly say, without irony, "Germanic") documentation came alive, so to speak, later when the Nuremburg Trials brought many of the surviving top Nazis to a form of Western justice in the late 1940s and early 1950s (the Russians on the other side of the Cold War line were much less meticulous in their dealings with the Nazis they caught by the war'd end, just as they were less civilized in their treatment of Germans as their armies moved towards Berlin from late 1944 through May 1945, but that's another story worth studying at another time and place...).Joseph Hartinger learned that four Jewish detainees (most of them "communists" or socialists) had been "shot while trying to escape..." during the opening months of Dachau the concentration camp. (One of the ironies that Ryback makes clear is that prior to the days of Nazism, Dachau was known as a center for the arts!). Hartinger was a German nationalist, but not a Nazi, and he was well schooled in the law, which said that prisoners were not to be tortured or murdered in German prisons. And so, with the help of assistants, he documented the murders of the first four victims of the SS, and then went on to document more murders (and tortures) at Dachau until blocked as Nazi laws took hold in late 1933. Amazingly, Hartinger's records survived the war, and his materials proved useful to prove, at Nuremberg, that from the beginning Nazism was a criminal enterprise that murdered its domestic enemies long before its armies conquered lands east and west and its agents got a free hand to murder on a massive scale from Poland and France to Russia and the Scandinavian countries.It's worth noting the names of those first four murder victims: Rudolg Benario, Ernst Goldmann, Arthur Kahn, and Erwin Kahn. First taken into "protective custody" by the new Nazi government of Bavaria and put under SS control at the newly opened Dachau concentration camp, the four were dead within a few weeks after being taken from their families. Over the subsequent months, the Nazi guards at Dachau tortured (through beatings from the feet to the shoulders) their victims, then killed them in various ways, usually claiming that the victims had "committed suicide" or were shot "trying to escape." Josef Hartinger not only documented the fact that these men had been murdered, but even provided photographs of the back of one of the victims (Sebastian Nefzger), showing the scarring that resulted from the vicious beatings he had suffered before he allegedly "killed himself." The photo of Nefzger's corpse (one of many astonishing photographs in this book) reminded me of those photographs of the scarrings of slaves from the slave eras in the United States. But unlike American slaves, the Nazis' victims were not useful and productive "property" at the time they were tortured, so their murders were the beginning of a long road to the depths of evil not contemplated prior to what Nazism became and did.One of the appalling facts that comes out clearly in Ryback's book is that more detailed attention by reporters to what the Nazis were doing might have slowed them down early. But over and over there was a "Munich" style version of reality competing with the facts for public attention in the nations that all wanted to avoid a repeat of what then was called "The Great War." And Ryback also notes how much value Hitler placed on good public relations from the first days of his power, forcing the government to allocate special funds for positive PR in nations like England and the United States from the middle 1930s on. Sadly, as we know, it worked in many cases. In league with many of the anti-Semites and racists who formed the majority of white Americans during those years, the apologists for Nazism, from Henry Ford to Charles Lindburg, managed to keep the drums beating for "Common Sense Neutrality" despite the invasions and conquests of Poland, then France, by the German armies. It was only with one of Hitler's more arrogant mistakes -- his declaration of war on the United States following Pearl Harbor in December 1941 -- that the majority of U.S. elected officials were able to united behind the President and the war against fascism in Europe and Japanese imperialism in the Pacific beginning in late 1941 and escalating through 1945, when the sheer industrial might of the United States helped pulverize Hitler's Reich and divide Germany after forcing its unconditional surrender.But when the war ended, the question remained how did all that happen? Not just aggressive war (which was one of the Nuremberg charges) but how did the enslavement of millions of people from the "East" and the liquidation of six million Jews (gypsies, and special needs people) in the vast number of concentration camps happen? And so, that journey began when the murderers and torturers at Dachau and their Bavarian leader (Heinrich Himmler) got away with it despite the work of Josef Hartinger and his staff in 1933.And it was not as if the "world" was not informed about what was going on at Dachau long before the Germany armies conquered Poland and created the death camps the most famous of which is Auschwitz. The crematoriums at Auschwitz were first put into operation almost a decade after Himmler's SS buddies in Bavaria began murdering in 1933. And the story was told early, too. One of those tortured by the Dachau guards, a communist named Hans Beimler, escaped and published a book with the German title "im Morderlager Dachau" in 1933! But because Beimler was a commie and a Jew, it became easy for the anti-communists and anti-Semites of the democracies to continue to ignore the facts. The ignoring of the "Final Solution" began long before the term "Final Solution" was invented.This book documents its sources well, and recognizes that today one of the most important sources of information consists of photographs and documents. And so the book not only provides the critical reader with a 22-page Appendix (the complete indictment prepared by Hartinger) but 35 pages of footnotes -- and 16 pages of amazing photographs of people, places and documents. The final photograph of the gate of Dachua with the infamous slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" (work makes you free) should to this day send chills to anyone who is trying to understand the complex roots of the histories that gave rise to our present world -- and the ideologies we still face in it.

However, when an entire people or nation, rises up and attacks and destroys their fellow human beings, including helpless children, handicapped and other defenseless persons, an additional question may arise in our minds.That question is: ”Where was our Law?” If you try to answer this question, it is a haunting of what it means to have a human mind. It is a good question to ask since from far back in our human history, going back before the Romans of Italy, and the Greeks of Athens, “Law” existed wherever there was a Civilization or Community. The Old Testament, the Torah of the Jews, was itself a Law Book, as much as a revelation. When “Law” fails, we may further wonder: “What takes its place?” Perhaps this well documented presentation of a searing snapshot into just such a question and modern reality provides an answer we will not like but must accept. After reading this book it is a reminder that when the “Law” fails, nothing, absolutely nothing, takes it place. SO we have here in this concise one volume 273 page account a detailed factual demonstration of the Criminal Justice System of Germany in 1932/1933, conducting an extraordinary Criminal Investigation of the torture and murder of German citizens/prisoners in the Dachau Concentration Camp. At this point the Government and Law of Germany was in transition but not yet in the full and complete control of the new Nazi Government. Here you can see those steps and moments before the “Law” ceased to exist and the moment when there was Law no more . As the Law is a human activity, there are always individual human beings, making decisions, interacting with each other and acting upon what they see, do and believe. Here two men tend to stand out as their Official acts, in course of their Official duties, is well documented and preserved from that time in Germany. Josef Hartinger, holding Office as Deputy Prosecutor in the Munich II District of Bavaria, who was previously awarded an Iron Cross in World War 1 and Dr. Moritz Flamm, the Munich II District Medical Examiner both received reports of deaths in Dachau. Together they investigated and sought Prosecution for that torture and murder. These two extraordinary men with others, worked together in what to us today would be a completely normal and expected activity of a Criminal Justice process seeking Truth, Justice, Law and accountability. However in the Germany of Nazi control, then confronting the Law of Germany, Hartinger and Flamm would answer our question of “When Law Fails, What Takes its Place”. The clarity shown by this modern stark reminder gives reality to the words of Sir Thomas Moore many centuries before. Nothing takes its place. This book details the utterly amazing dedication of this small group of men to the Law then in effect in Germany and to which they were sworn to uphold and enforce. At that time in Germany, the transition to Nazi control not yet having been completed, the truth finding function of the Law can be seen striping away the criminality of the Nazi Government. Then, in a moment, the Law ceases to exist. The historical record revealed by this book and the documentation upon which it is based must be taught in our schools so it can be seen and believed and so men like Hartinger and Flamm can inspire. Well researched, riveting book that captures the rapid pace that Germany's legal institutions were undermined and perverted after Hitler rose to power in January 1933 through the detailed examination of the first deaths at the Dachau concentration camp. Hartiger's determination for justice is inspiring, but the depravity and violence of the SS guards are disgusting and the Nazis' cynical corruption and manipulation Germany's institutions are shocking. It is hard to believe that this is Mr. Gillham's first novel; it is THAT good. This is a very thought-provoking novel that is never once pedantic or didactic; it has a driving plot and unforgettably interesting and complex characters. Mr. Gillham weaves numerous moral questions through the book, ranging from marital fidelity in the time of war to courage in the face of personal danger; he doesn't answer most of these questions for us, but rather he lets (makes) us think about how we might act in similar circumstances. In other words, he's not afraid of moral ambiguities.This is a very different book from Joseph Kanon's "The Good German," but they deal with similar issues and, at least in my opinion, both classics.I greatly look forward to more books from Mr. Gillham. This one amazed me.

Sigrid Schroder endures the privations of wartime Berlin—husband fighting in Russia, mother-in-law all too present in her cramped apartment, Allied bombers forcing her to spend many nights sheltering underground, real cigarettes and coffee almost unobtainable, constant monitoring and hectoring by the authorities. And yet…there are movies, seen from the back row of the cinema. Under the beam of light from the projector, she meets a man, Egon. Egon’s dangerous vitality overwhelms her, and the affair leads her into forms of non-compliance and even resistance that astonish her even as she plunges boldly forward. “City of Women” is the story of a woman’s awakening to her true self at a time and in a place where being true to yourself can get you killed. It’s also a story of how to live an authentic life when every garment is threadbare, every meal is insufficient, every pleasure is furtive, every hope is repressed, every communication is propaganda, every good action is suspect. David Gillham carefully paces Sigrid’s ascent from apathy to heroism up to a slam-bang climax. Along the way, he parcels out the details of life in the Nazi capital at the beginning of the regime’s decline—like the swastika-shaped confetti distributed along the path of a “spontaneous” pro-Nazi demonstration, the children’s book illustrated with a caricature of a Jew, the shape of the brass cap on a cyanide capsule. Acclaimed author of wartime thrillers Alan Furst blurbed “City of Women” as “extraordinary,” and he was not wrong.

Berlin. 1943. The RAF bomb and the Jews hide. Life in a grim totalitarian regime is something Americans know little about. That is until the informed reader picks up a copy of David R. Gillham's brilliant debut novel City of Women! The chief character is an ordinary woman who will do extraordinary things during the course of the novel. Her name is Sigrid Schroeder. She lives with her irritating mother in law in a small apartment. Her husband Kaspar worked at a bank before being drafted and sent to combat on the dreaded Eastern Front in Russia. She has no children as the couple's only child died at birth during the time of the burning of the Jewish synagogues in November 1938. Sigrid works in a glum patent office on a part time basis. She often goes to the movies. One day she meets a young woman named Ericha. We learn that this person is involved in hiding Jews from the deadly Gestapo. Sigrid becomes involved in efforts to save the Jewish victims of Hitler's evil. She becomes a heroic person by novel's end. She in far from perfect! She has a Jewish lover Egon and a German officer lover named Wolfram. Gillham has constructed an exciting plot and is able to draw good character sketches of a variety of characters. The author knows the geography of Berlin and we learn what it was like to live in this tragic era. None of the characters are all good or bad but are seen as people trying to survive and save their skins in a climate of betrayal, danger and sudden death. The sex scenes are handled with skill and the dialogue is well done. This novel is a impressive debut novel and the author is to be commended for a fine work of fiction. I believe it could be made into a fine film Recommended for lovers of historical fiction and the Second World War.

What would it be like to live in a the city where bombs fall from the sky almost every clear night and you must flee to cellars or tunnels seeking safety? What would it be like to turn on the radio and listen to the propaganda arm of your government put the best face it can on lost battles in which thousands of your countrymen die, are captured or maimed, but then to turn down the volume, hoping you want be caught listening to the BBC report from the other side? What would it be like to be on the street when there is a raid and Jewish men and women, some your neighbors, are beaten and herded off to never be seen again? What would it be like to have to guard every word, knowing that your neighbor, co-worker, or family member may make a call that would result in your own arrest? What would it be like to be forced into making a choice between safely closing your mind’s eye to evil being done in the name of government or doing what, in your heart of hearts, you know is the right thing? Like a great time machine, “City Of Women” transports the reader back to that time and place and confronts him with these questions. Mr. Gillam did a tremendous job of reconstructing the Berlin of that time and populating it with characters you love, hate, or pity. This is truly a great read.

City of Women was a book club selection. I just finished the book and I have to admit that historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. Well written and thought provoking, rarely does a book grab me like this one did. I found this book to be excellent in so many ways: character development, storyline, flow, consistency in purpose. Wow - I would love to find more books like this one.

What I found perhaps the most valuable about this book was Davis' explanation of the differences between myths, legends, fables and folktales. In the Introduction and Chapter One, Davis explores the concepts of story-making and storytelling in human history, which have evolved with language and culture to help shape our worldviews today through imprinted backstories that range from the obviously fantastic to contemporary religion. Understanding these concepts can help us to understand our own actions as well as those of other cultures. Although his descriptions are brief, they do provide a good jumping-off point for further study.Beginning with Chapter Two, Davis is off to the races, providing in-depth descriptions and analysis of mythologies, from ancient Egypt to Mesopotamia to the Greeks and Romans, and onward through the Western traditions; crossing over to India and the other Eastern traditions, and then Africa, but running out of steam, it seemed, with aboriginal-American mythology and the traditions of Polynesia, fetching up at last in just a few short pages with aboriginal Australia. The book is also bulky in places, with introductory pages in each chapter, much of which is repeated later in lists of mythological gods and personalities. This converts the book specifically into a reference as opposed to a book that can be read comfortably from cover to cover.Nevertheless the book remains a good place to chart further study, with its outline format, lengthy timelines, and historical vignettes.

I must admit, this is the kind of book that was written precisely for people like me with limited knowledge of mythology stemming from a book or two I'd read as a child, e.g. "The 12 Labors of Hercules", and a few movies I've watched, e.g. Troy, which hardly qualify as sources on the subject.After reading over 500 pages, I've gained more knowledge about the history of ancient civilizations than their myths. Thankfully, I realized that a dozen or more Gods worshipped by the Egyptians, Greeks, Mesopotamians et al. interested me less than their way of life. Kenneth Davis, through no fault of his own wrote more about these ancient civilizations and their rich cultural histories than their Gods and myths. Davis had to lay the foundation by which stories of creationism and heroes developed. Increasingly, I found myself browsing rather than reading the pages where various Gods were meticulously categorized.As far as coverage, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece received the lion's share, and deservedly so as compared to Chinese, Japanese, African and especially Pacific Islander civilizations. Nevertheless, Mr. Davis masterfully provides a starting point for mythically challenged people like me to explore Gods and stories of various civilizations.The main take away from this book for me was how religion and religious customs developed, and the depth to which various religions borrowed and adopted ideas to make themselves whole.While "Don't Know Much About Mythology" provides the lay person with adequate information on myths that dominated numerous cultures over time, there are undoubtedly countless other books that are better suited to tackle this subject in a more comprehensive manner.

I loved this book! It's very interesting and the author put in a lot of effort to make the information accessible. That is, it's a very academic book but it reads like a novel. I learned a lot and want to continue reading his other books. My only criticism is that the chapters on non-Western civilizations, especially Africa and the Americas, are a lot shorter and less detailed than the others. I'm not sure if that is because of the author's bias or if these culture's mythologies are less well-documented. I was disappointed with those chapters but overall the book is an excellent read for anyone interested in history, sociology and/or religion.

This will be the 3rd time I have read this book. Gotten from the local library twice and decided I had to have my own copy. Kenneth Davis writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. His humor mingled in with world history, makes it a wonderful opportunity to learn about human nature and our beliefs, and why we need to believe.Just finished reading his book on American History little known facts and will end up reading it again also.Kenneth Davis by far is one of my favorite authors!

An excellent overview of the subject matter. However, due to the breadth of the subject area, there is a lack of substantial detail. An excellent starting point for additional study.

This was one of the best books I ever read. I had to read Davis' book on the Bible for class, and it opened up world's for me. This mythology book did the same.

It's hysterical. I adore Oliver Jeffers' wit. It's simple but enjoyable to read. Both my eighteen-month old and my four-year old like reading it. And it truly teaches opposites.

I've been reading What's the Opposite to my five year old, and she loves it. She gets the humor in Jeffers's books and likes his unique way of teaching concepts. While this book isn't quite as quirky as None the Number, it is still a hit in our house. We've learned opposites like up and down, half full and half empty, and even some less obvious ones like lucky and unlucky. This is a wonderful book if you are looking for books on opposites or good books that teach concepts, especially if you appreciate a humorous twist. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

One of the sad things about re-publishing a book (first by Sheed Ward in 1960, now by Sophia Institute in 2017) is that the product, for all practical purposes, appears to be very recent. It is an older perspective of Christ's Passion and Death. Simply put, there is much more known today about this subject matter, so I would suggest that since the new publisher does not make that clear on the cover (it is only when you open to the first few pages and see the Imprimatur was granted in 1959) that this is a bit deceptive. It's sad to pay money for material that, which never is truly outdated, it can be updated - as one disappointed customer describes about the information revealed very recently about the Shroud of Turin. I find myself noting facts that I have read from other more recent biblical exegeses of the Holy Bible by popular Catholic authors that present a much more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Much more is known today archaeologically than in 1959. That's 59 years ago! I don't know that I would buy it again, but I will finish it since I paid for it.

I initially bought this book with the intention of nursing it as my Lenten read. The book was so engaging, I found myself staying up hours after my normal sleep time just to read "one more chapter." The book is filled with deep insights that remain true to the gospel without pandering to sentimentality. It presents a stark glimpse into the electric charged political atmosphere of Jerusalem at the time. It also presents a touching glimpse into Jesus' last hours. When the tomb is sealed at the books end, I found myself longing for the Resurrection, the true purpose of The Passion. The book truly drew me closer to the sacrifice our Lord and Saviour endured for our sins.It is an absolute must read.

This book is as good as any book have read on this subject. I was continually amazed at the new ideas and historical way the book dealt with this most significant event. I found myself saying to people, “Did you know that....” about several passages from the book. I have placed many markers in the book for later reference. The book is not only about the time period but traces ideas back to the Old Testament as well as relating their importance to us today. It deals with the people and groups involved and what they were thinking and how that prompted their actions. It also discusses the place of and the how of this awful act against the Lord.The writing style is concise and easily understood. It is a great introduction or is viable for someone who has extensive experience with the topic. I recommend this book highly!

The book that gives the sacred knowledge about symbols

Everyone in this country could benefit from reading just the preface of this wonderful book. "Islamic terrorists" have created the "terror" of a prejudice that grossly misrepresents the underlying Spiritual truths of this religion. This deprives us of the wonderful principles, philosophy, morals, art, music, literature and, of course, architecture that are expressed through this world view. This work is original and unique in it's scholarly and artistic presentation of Persian roots in both ancient and modern architecture. Perfect for the coffee table of enlightened readers and their guests.

The information contained in this book has influenced some of my favorite contemporary artists, like Monir Farmanfarmaian and Bill Viola. I faintly remember seeing the book as a child in Iran. I was reacquainted with "A Sense of Unity" in 2007 during the making of "The Night Journey", an experimental video game, when Mr. Viola brought his copy to a team meeting. He flipped through it, as he read passages and pointed to illustration, to help us understand how it changed his life when he first read it in his 20s.

This is an extraordinary study of the roots and history of Persian architecture, vividly illustrated. Two thousand years of space, form and culture and a discussion of the roots roots of it. Written in the time of the last Shah when the clergy was banished from government and Iran was leaping into the modern world. Where, I wonder, are the authors today?
