Where Oceanswept was a fun and carefree adventure story, Undertow is more complicated and heartbreaking. Tessa and Nichaolas' relationship was easy and effortless on the sea, but when they return to land and the expectations of high society tug on their emotions and patience. Tessa struggles to reconcile who she has become with who society expects her to be, and Nicholas struggles to be the man he wishes to be. But unfortunately the past and greater political machinations come into play and toy with our main characters and their touching relationship.I think this is a book that I fell more in love with while re-reading as a more critical reader, although I didn’t even rate it when I first read it in 2014. You may know that romance is not one of my preferred genres, but this Historical Romance second-in-series surpasses the first book in every way. The characters, all of them, are complex and interesting, the romance and love triangle tugs at my heartstrings, and I am still very much in need of the final book.
Lara Hays book "Undertow" was able to draw me into the story on so many levels! I loved reading it! Its an action tale with twists and turns that intrigue the reader and keep them hungry to know the outcome……it's also a thought provoking character study about the social struggles of upper class women in the Caribbean in the 18th century. At times I wanted to shake its young heroine, Tessa for her embattled choices as she grappled with family pressures and self absorbed men! Lara Hays gives her characters real conflict, emotion and deep thoughts as she spins her story. The ending of the book tugs at the reader's heartstrings as larger than life drama unfolds. While it confirms yet again the inner strength of the main character Nicholas, the ending leaves me desperately wanting to know when the next part of the Trilogy will be published!!!
I have read both Ocean Swept and Undertow and found both appealing reads. The locations,characters and story line were enjoyable throughout. I appreciated the fact, too, that the stories were filled with sexual tension rather than the explicitness used by so many writers in their work today. I'm tired of reading descriptions, on every other page, of what's always happening below a man's waist and ditto for the lady characters. We get the idea. However, by the same token, the lead characters' romance in these books, while endearing, doesn't seem quite plausible.... imagine being around a pirate, through two books; who only gives kisses and doesn't even make a pass? Now that's self-control. Looking forward to the next volume....
If you read the other reviews you will see that there is not one that didn't love this book. I loved it too. Great book. One reviewer mentioned that, this, the second book, is better than the first. I heartily agree. I never give a book five stars unless I really love it. I liked the first book too, but, this one is all that I could ask for in a book. It draws you in and makes you really care about the characters. It has excitement, danger, a love story and no steamy sex scenes that you have to skim over because after the first two they are all the same and boring. This book is not boring. I went to the author's web site and signed up to get a notification when the third book comes out. It said this winter and as this is 1/20/15, it should be out soon.
What started off a little choppy and exasperating as Tessa made all the wrong moves and implied all the wrong feelings about her relationship to Nicholas to everyone, made a fantastic about face about 3/4 of the way through to the high-seas adventure and swashbuckling story we had in the first novel. By the end I hated the story having to end! I know Hays is writing the final installment, and there are the novellas still to enjoy, but I can't wait for the final chapter of the high-seas adventure that is Tessa and Nicholas' story!
What can I possibly say to get more people to read this book? Just read it. (Read 'Oceanswept' first, of course)We pick up with Nicholas and Tessa where the first book left us. Heading to meet Tessa's father in St. Kipps. This book was filled with a lot of emotion, and the ending is heartbreakingly beautiful. This series is quickly becoming a favorite for me, one I will most likely re-read over and over until I die, right up there with any books by Georgette Heyer, and Mary Stewart. Word on the street is that the final book in the series will be released early 2015 and I genuinely cannot wait. If you love adventure, pirates, and romance this series is a MUST read!
I just finished reading Undertow this morning. It broke my heart, and it will break yours too.Undertow is a well-crafted and well-written and well-researched book. You'll get lost in the world, sucked into the lives of all the characters. You'll be frustrated and torn and frightened and desperate and heart-broken. And when you get to the end of Undertow, you'll be dying for the final book in the trilogy.I so desperately want this to series to be made into a movie (or three).
I have to say that I am writing this while wiping the tears from my eyes after finishing Undertow. It's already 1 in the morning, and I don't think I'll be able to sleep, due to the fact that I keep thinking about Nicholas and Tessa. Thank you for a wonderful story that had me totally engrossed and neglecting the rest of the world. I am hoping for a happily ever after ending, after all "it's written in the stars".
