I've been an artist all my life and I don't need another book, but this one I like very much. Good examples, good text and I love that he is not about bragging about all the cameras and lens he owns, which are better than yours. I was very involved in underwater photography some yeas back.A fiend of mine made (that dates it a bit, we had to make our equipment) a water proof housing for a Hasilblad camera (that shows you where I come from, I can't even spell the name much less afford one). He started taking pictures and people noted how good and interesting they were. Some started saying that "if I had a camera like his I could do that type of work to." My friend, a little angered and ever a teacher, went out and bought a Kodak box camera from the 1930's, you know, the black leather covered cameras of yesterday that when you took the picture the camera said "Ko--dak". He bought-up into the 1930's because that's when Kodak first started using electrical connections for flash use and he wanted to be able to use flash. Interestingly The Hasilblad (whatever) used 220 film known as two and a quarter (square) format film as did the Kodak. Mark started taking pictures and began showing them at our PWNUMPS (Pacific Northwest Underwater Photographic society) ,they were slides, at our meetings. Nobody said a word, they were good pictures! "But if if I had a camera Like his......." That's when he shown his $2.00 thrift store camera and the case he'd made for it. All the above so I could get around to say it is not the cameras you own, it is your brain and your training of your mind to see and notice things, and this book rubs your nose in seeing and noticing things, not equipment. I enjoy his style of writing and I 'd love to shake his hand some day.

I was looking for a new hobby on Doctor's orders, and came up with photography- for no other reason than it had always been a life ambition. And this book really helped me relearn some of the basics of art composition from all those years ago in high school (gulp).By keeping it simple and with lots of actual photos to show the benefits of what he is talking about, Mr. Kapferer makes what could be a daunting process easy to understand and to the point. He covers everything from leading lines to how to groups objects to how to crop your results. And who thought there was any right way to crop? This one was a surprise to me, but the results definitely speak volumes even at this early stage in my progress.He also has a bit of a deeper examination of color and contrast, but this too is clear and easy to understand.I found this book a really easy introduction to how to have better photographs without being overly intimidating given my lack of experience. Better still, I have seen my photos improve already, which is what it is all about anyway.

This is not a very large book to read but it has some good practical suggestions to improve photo compositions. I found the color chapter very interesting and I had not read anything similar in many other books on the subject. I have applied the suggestions and can see the improvements. One of the things I like about this book is it's brevity. The author gets to the point and spends enough time illustrating his point with out going over board. Good sized chunks of knowledge.

It was ok. I was expecting something a little deeper. I kept reading thinking "ok these are the introductory chapters, we'll get to the good stuff soon" but unfortunately it never got passed that; it just ended. If you don't know anything about basic composition, it's probably a good place to start.

I learnt lot of interesting facts from this book. It provided me with a thorough understanding about the impacts of colors when used individually or as a mixture. Even the usage of complimentary colors was one of the many new things I learnt about. I believe that the checklist is a good tip to follow for any photographer in order to make the shot better.The pictures given as example for the topic light and shadow were really amazing. In fact, using lots of real images to explain the points was quite impressing. All the images were fine and excellent captures.The things look simpler the way they are presented in the book. But I believe there is a hell lot of information which will be useful for not only just beginners but intermediate and advanced level photographers.

Mark has a good way of getting a point across, without boring you to sleep, or treating the reader as an ignorant sub species. He somehow manages to take information you've learned long ago, and make it seem refreshing, and in a new light. A great read for beginners, and a good brush up for intermediate photographers. Well done Mark!

You won't find any true revelations or super useful information there, but main knowledge is nicely outlined and this e-book is well worth it's price!I mean, maybe in book for 10x price you will find more information, but information quality and quantity won't be 10x bigger

I read The Mermaid Murders and really liked it. I heard all these amazing things about Josh Lanyon. So I tried the first Holmes and Moriarty novel. Meh, cold on it. So I thought, the Adrien English mysteries seem to be the most beloved; I’ll try those. My impression of this is still Meh, I’m cold on it. I didn’t think the characters were particularly interesting. I also feel very ambivalent about closeted characters trying to date out characters. It always seems unfair to the out guy and makes me just dislike the closeted guy, no matter what his reasons. He just seems selfish. I thought the plot moved very slowly, so even though I read it in one sitting, I felt vaguely bored. It didn’t take me long to finish it, maybe 4 hours, so at least it wasn’t very long. I don’t think I’ll continue this series. I guess I’m just not her target audience.

I love everything about this book. I listened to the audiobook and it was perfectly narrated by Chris Patton. It is a mystery, my first love, a gay romance, another love, about a mystery book seller, score!! All of Josh Lanyon’ books are excellent. He is a master story teller across several genres. This book introduces us to Adrien English who’s best friend has been murdered. He is a suspect and becomes an amateur sleuth in trying to solve the crime and clear his name. As the clues unfold Adrien seems to be the only one who can put them together properly. We meet a humorous cast of characters beautifully brought to life by Chris Patton. Patton gives distinctive voices to the secondary characters in addition to the leading men. The homicide detective, Jake Riordan, is as skeptical as any good copper should be and as homophobic as any “straight”copper could be. As the crime is solved each man begin to change his opinion of the other man and a series is born. Off to listen to the next book and I have a feeling this will be a Adrien English binge weekend.

I hesitate to label this “Romance” but it’s there, all be it, very little. I guess that’s where my eclectic reading style comes in handy, because when the story is good and the characters draw me in, I don’t miss the heat between two characters. Especially when they are just getting to know each other.I also have a teensy weensy confession to make, Fatal Shadows has been sitting on my Kindle just chillin’ away for quite some time. Don’t even ask why it’s taken me so long to finally pick it up, because I have no idea. Now that I have though, rest assured I will be seeking out the rest of the books in the Adrien English Mysteries. Sooner, rather than later. I loved Adrien’s “voice” in Fatal Shadows. He was witty, smart and funny. I really like characters who don’t take themselves too seriously, and Adrien definitely fell into that category.It also should be mentioned that this was my first Josh Lanyon book, but it will not be my last. As a matter of fact, I just picked up another ARC, so stay tuned. 😉

I should have written a review after I finished each book, but since I didn't, this is a review of the entire series (no spoilers):I love this entire series. In all earnestness. It is so clever, so funny, so unique, so beautiful, just the best...probably my favorite series of all time. Josh Lanyon is probably also my favorite author because no matter how short or long the story he spins is, you always become invested in its outcome and enjoy its duration. Adrien and Jake...wow...I just love those two with all my heart. Even when I was pissed off at one or both. There's five books, and so much goes on between Jake and Adrien, and outside of them, that the story is so hard at times, spans years, and works through a lot of obstacles, but you enjoy every second of it. The mysteries are so well written, that you really have no idea who done it until Adrien knows (and I usually can guess beforehand with other authors). The characters are all so distinctive and unique and colorful that you react to them on way or another.Things never turn out how you think, some parts pain your heart, sometimes you're sitting there yelling at the book and waving your arms around, sometimes you are tearing up, sometimes you are laughing until your abs hurt, sometimes you are hoping so hard it consumes your head, and sometimes you are smiling so hard and wide and so happily that you feel all warm inside. And through it all, you won't be able to get Adrien and Jake out of your head (nor will you want to). I don't quite hold all other books to these because I know none will stand up to them, but they easily take the cake. I really can't say enough about or fully describe the intricacies of Lanyon's writing or how he just sunk a hole in one with this series, I can only urge you with all of my heart to read it, and I will buy all of them in paperback (I have them now on kindle) to reread sometime soon. Plus I still have the interactive sixth book to enjoy! So, potential reader, the bottom line is that Adrien and Jake and their mysteries will worm their way into your heart, and will never get out, so just read, enjoy, and cherish.P.S. After you read "The Dark Tide" (the fifth book), read the interview Josh Lanyon did answering lingering questions about the end of the series (or more accurately, clearing up a few things and "checking in" with the characters about their life sixth months after the conclusion of the series).

She also designed the logo for The Boston Cultural Collaborative for Early Leaning, which represented eight museums of Boston. Mary Lee was filmed by WGBH-TV as the art instructor for the A.C.E.S. Project in collaboration with the Museum of Science, the Children s Museum, and Zoo New England. She recently wrote and illustrated Island Potcake Dogs, a series of early learning books, inspired by so many dogs, who find a way to live through extreme hardships.
