Purchased this book for my dad this past Christmas. My parents met while both worked at Sanders so there are wonderful memories for our family tied to this Michigan legend. The greatest surprise was seeing a picture of my mom, who we lost 2 years ago, within the pages of this book. A great look back at the changes Sanders went through and a must for any one who grew up enjoying all the sweetness Sanders brought to Detroit and the suburbs. Only wish we didn't live in Texas now because all the pictures and descriptions created cravings for Bumpy Cake and other sweet treats.

The reason I was didsspointed a bit because I was researching dessert recipes on kindle and was thinking it was one of those vintage dessert book recipes but I do like background stories coming with. Sadly at the end of the page there weren’t any recipes in it I was about to give it 1 star but I guess it was my mistake for not checking properly before buying therefore I’ll give it 4 Stars ... at least leave a recipe!Although the history was nice.

Those of us who grew up in Detroit know Sanders as a special place always accompanied by special memories. Hot fudge cream puffs...tuna sandwiches..spinning around on the stools...the little trays that hooked over the counter for kiddies...bumple cake, ah, heaven on earth. This book is full of pictures of all of those wondrous places that we looked forward to visting on special occasions. Great history, some of which was before my time but interesting to read. A must have for Detroiters!

Grew up in Detroit and shared this book with my mom. We had a good time going down memory lane. Great pictures.

Being a native Detroiter, I actually remember visiting Sanders' stores (confectionery's) when I was younger. The memory of those wonderful treats can still make my mouth water! Actually, there are a few businesses that still serve Sanders' items! This book was very informative about the history of Sanders. The actual and historical photographs made the study of this history interesting and fun. This book is able to educate and entertain at the same time. It provided a true behind the scenes history lesson. This type of walk through memory lane was greatly appreciated.P.S. I enjoy the Arcadia books' series greatly.Garie Thomas-BassAuthor of the book: Purposeful (Not Random) Acts of Kindness (AKA Beginning Steps for Overcoming Spoiled Brat-aholism)Purposeful (Not Random) Acts of Kindness: (AKA Beginning Steps for Overcoming Spoiled Brat-aholism)

Born into Brothels: Photographs by the Children of Calcutta, by Zana Briski

From Publishers Weekly

Eight children, all raised in brothels in Calcutta's red light district, display their work-colorful photographs of the family members and strangers who populate their lives and of the streets and homes which they inhabit-in this companion volume to the Academy Award nominated documentary Born into Brothels. While the poverty that these children experience is always present in the images, the photographs diverge from the expected sordid scenes; instead they capture a wide variety of moods and circumstances. The images-from a shot of a young girl apathetically stretched out on a car to a sweeping panorama of the rooftops of Calcutta to a close-up self-portrait of an exuberant girl yelling at the camera at dusk-appear impressively professional. The children capture the textures surrounding them beautifully, often with a seemingly intuitive sense of composition. The film the book accompanies follows the story of Briski's attempts to teach photography to these children, who, she says, have "little possibility of escaping their mother's fate or for creating another type of life," and this volume includes writing by both Briski and the film's co-director, as well as stills from the documentary. Demonstrating the way in which photography can be a means of hope and an "immensely liberating and empowering force," the book gives these children, the "most stigmatized people in Calcutta's red light district," a means to share their often ignored perspectives, while also allowing readers a glimpse into the emotional depths of their lives. Beautiful book. Watched the documentary and then bought 8 of these books as gifts for my socially conscious friends.

Born into Brothels shows what can happen when children in desperate circumstances are given the opportunity to talk about their lives by making pictures. The pictures that the young people make provide evidence that a camera in the hands of a child can be an empowering device that provide the voice that they might otherwise not have. A powerful testament to the power of photographs and the power of pictures.

A stunning 'coffee table' type book with very serious content. This book makes a solid 'companion' piece to the documentary Born into Brothels. I will use both for a college course on gender. I would suggest viewing the documentary first, but I believe this book will also stand on its own.

Good book and came in a timely manner!

If you have seen the movie, you'll love seeing the images in print. If you haven't seen the movie, rent it or buy it and you'll get the whole incredible story of these kids.

An interesting book, interesting idea....if you have something to do with India, or brothels, this might be worth looking into.

I bought this because I wanted to preserve my impressions after viewing the DVD. The DVD was exceptional as is the story of these children and how quick they were to pick up a camera and be able to do something with it. I'm still working on that. This is a nice companion to the DVD but if I had it to do over again I would probably pass.

My advanced-placement high-school seniors recently read and discussed George Bernard Shaw's play MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION, which explores British class structure, the roles open to turn-of-the-last-century women, and the morality of prostitution. Their own strands of thought were largely theoretical; however, after seeing BORN INTO BROTHELS last Friday evening and immediately buying the companion book, this Monday I was able to present some concrete images to my students of the horrors of slum-living and prostitution in Calcutta. The photos here are beautiful, heart-wrenching, intelligent, savvy, and fraught with layers of meaning. It is clear that the lives of these Calcutta youngsters are a far cry from the lives of suburban Americans. One of the functions of literature is the engendering of empathy for those whose experiences are far different from our own. While Shaw's play is insightful, these images from India had an immediate, powerful effect on kids raised more on television and video than on the written word. Ms. Briski is to be commended for her compassionate work and for trying to raise public awareness about the plight of millions of young people across the planet. One can only wish that even more could be done to ease the horrors of the lives of these impoverished youngsters and their families.

The Harm in Hate Speech, by Jeremy Waldron

Review

“A powerful little book that seeks to dismantle familiar defenses of the right to indefensible speech.”―Kelefa Sanneh, New Yorker“[Waldron’s] book sheds light on a number of difficult issues, and occasionally exposes the difference between historical fact and fiction… He elegantly and convincingly advocates that our leaders should not only avoid the use of hate speech themselves, but also condemn its use by others… We should all do our best to preserve President Ford’s conception of America as a place where we can disagree without being disagreeable. An understanding of the arguments in Waldron’s book may help us to do so.”―John Paul Stevens, New York Review of Books“Waldron…challenges society and its legal system to do something about [the harm done by hate speech]. But the likelihood that something will be done is slim if Waldron is right about the state of First Amendment discourse: ‘[I]n the American debate, the philosophical arguments about hate speech are knee-jerk, impulsive and thoughtless.’ Not the arguments of this book, however; they hit the mark every time.”―Stanley Fish, New York Times“The Harm in Hate Speech is the fullest embodiment of arguments that Waldron has been developing for years… Waldron’s treatise is primarily a philosophical defense of hate-speech regulation. He argues that hate speech is an ‘environmental’ problem that pollutes the atmosphere of security and dignity that society should provide to all its members… Speech intended to intimidate or malign destroys this assurance… While we should continue to protect the free speech of those we disagree with, The Harm in Hate Speech makes a compelling case that they are not the only ones who need defending.”―Daniel Townshend, American Prospect“Waldron is firmly on the side of the hate speech legislators. He wants free speech dogmatists to think again, and presents a series of challenges to the prevailing view in the U.S.”―Nigel Warburton, Times Literary Supplement“To the (mostly white) liberals who say they hate the content of hate speech, but defend its right to exist under the First Amendment (often while patting themselves on the back for their tolerance), Waldron replies, in essence: easy for you to say. In this brief, eloquent book, he urges readers (at a bare minimum) to think about how hate speech feels from the point of view of its targets… From key court battles Waldron teases out the ideas that matter in deciding how to balance free expression with a free society, one in which everybody can ‘know that when they leave home in the morning, they can count on not being discriminated against or humiliated or terrorized.’”―Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe“This is a wonderful book. It conveys complex ideas in an accessible and convincing way… Jeremy Waldron has put together a clear and compelling rationale for hate-speech laws―the harm that it causes to human dignity.”―Katharine Gelber, Times Higher Education“This book develops a theory of hate speech that challenges existing U.S. legal rubrics. U.S. courts have repeatedly held that the First Amendment forbids criminalization of hate speech, but Waldron advances a broader view of the link between free expression and important social values such as tolerance and inclusiveness… If dignity is a concept that is valued by a polity, Waldron argues, then there are important reasons to distinguish hate speech from other forms of expression that merit legal protection. An elegant synthesis of modern legal philosophy and leading cases, as well as a critique of the positions of prominent legal theorists such as Ronald Dworkin and C. Edwin Baker, the book is a readable, thought-provoking contribution to the literature.”―S. B. Lichtman, Choice“A vigorously argued, intelligent challenge to the ‘liberal bravado’ of U.S. First Amendment scholars. In an eloquent reply to free-speech advocates, Waldron moves step by step in building the argument as to why hate-speech laws are good for a well-ordered society… The author argues that the damage caused by hate speech is like an ‘environmental threat to social peace, a sort of slow-acting poison’ that robs the intended victims of their dignity and reputation in society. Waldron’s analogy between hate speech and pornography―in terms of the defamation of women―is particularly noteworthy. He responds carefully to the notion of free speech as a necessary part of democracy’s ‘marketplace of ideas’ and looks to the Enlightenment philosophes for their views on toleration and defamation.”―Kirkus Reviews“Waldron is a legal and political thinker at the height of his powers. Even, or perhaps especially, for someone who disagrees with his position on hate speech legislation, this book conveys a subtle, rich, rigorous and deeply challenging argument.”―Timothy Garton Ash, St Antony’s College, University of Oxford

Jeremy delivers a true lesson in this book and after you are done reading it you can't help but love thy neighbor... and drop the hate speech we have became so accustomed to see on our social media daily chats.

Sticks and stones ... name-calling and humor can't hurt you unless you let it. If you are humorless and like to take offense you will love this book. Or if you think the ability to speak out should be limited only to those who think like you.

This book is about 98% drivel. It is written in a very typical humanities style - his ideas and the logic/evidence behind them are so weak and vague that he tries to obscure the problem by rambling for pages on end. Everything he writes in the book could be stated in about one paragraph:We should have hate speech law to protect the social standing of minorities. On the other hand, some argue that we should allow hate speech in order to add legitimacy to anti-discrimination laws, so that they can be fully debated, or that the concept of personal autonomy is damaged by not allowing one to fully express oneself. That's basically it, so no need to waste your money on the entire book.

Groups of people act politically.Criticism of the political actions and speech of these groups is often labeled as "hate speech".Thus, hate speech regulation prevents political speech; and specifically that which is in opposition to the political speech of others.Essentially, it provides for a legal umbrella by which groups of people can seek unopposed political gains, often at the political, legal, democratic, and resource expense of other groups. Thus, by its nature, "hate speech" regulation is antithetical to liberalism as it protects the political gains of some groups at the expense of other groups. There is no legitimate rationale, observed or theoretical, for the conclusion that such protection will stay within the realm of equal rights. Today, we observe even agitation for hate speech regulation, as this book represents, being used to advance the political interests of groups well beyond any objectively morally just campaign for equal rights. This underlying reality of political competition is the foundation for the unquestionable nature of the first amendment that this book is attempting to undermine. Last: just because some so-called liberal democracies ban speech, this does not serve as a mandate to mimic their democratic corruption.

The author makes an argument against the broad traditional American view of Speech rights. He wants to create a legal and constititional window for the censoring and suppression of certain speech which he groups under the catch-all title of "hate speech". He invents a "group" right: the right to "dignity" which he then balances off against the right to speech in the system he describes. He tries to define his proposals as a positive (withdrawing a protection) rather than negative (banning something) but I really wonder if that sort of difference means anything at all?Waldron is good at showing the reality of speech today. Of showing the limits under the current American system of law that already exist and how the preceptions of many don't quite line up with the reality of the system. While the arguments in that respect are well made and potentially educational, I don't think that they help his case much. The limits of free speech under the current system do not themselves say anything about the wisdom of new limits on speech. What concerns me about the book is that he is hiding a broad set of concepts and changes to what speech rights means behind a "straw man" called hate speech. His straw man gives him easy examples which are difficult to argue against and at the same time allows him to avoid nearly all the broad consequences of his proposals. The idea of dignity he presents both goes beyond just the issue of "hate speech" and raises difficult questions as a general principle. The book edges toward the logical consequences of applying "dignity" to images of women. Various advertising images and most especially pornography could well be argued as acting against the right to "dignity" of women. Waldron isn't really very effective in terms of drawing the lines of where "dignity" ends. Political speech, by its very nature, often leads to speech that impacts the dignity of one group or another. What is to be done when two groups (lets say Palestinians and Israelis) attack each others dignity as part of their politics? People on both sides of the gun issue assault each others dignity all the time. Was the campaign against the Koch brothers in recent years an attack on their dignity? The problem with "hate speech" is that while its easy to find examples that it would be good to suppress, coming up with a legal framework that touches only those easy examples and nothing else is not so simple. Waldron's "dignity" approach didn't do it as far as I'm concerned. If it is applied as a principle, its reach is far too broad. If it is applied in the exception, it becomes a very arbitrary sort of law which will be selectively enforced based on politics.Where are the limits of "dignity"?Arbitrary enforcement has often been the problem with these laws in France. If the hate speech laws were uniformly applied, the outcome would have been many results which would be considered unacceptable. But in practice, the French courts have simply nullified the law's effects when it would produce an unacceptable result in terms of constraining speech. What is hate speech in France very much depends on who is making the speech and what the political majority thinks of them. Thus an unpopular minority comedian can be banned from performing. But a person considered a serious novelist or the producers of a film or the publishers of a popular satirical magazine will not be found guilty. The French courts have also said that while attacking an entire group (Muslims) is unacceptable hate speech, qualified attacks on minorities within the muslim community is acceptable speech. Therefore while words said against "muslims" are hate, to say the same words against "fundementalist muslims" or "terrorist muslims" are not hate. The great problem in France is that while those who favor these laws talk about protecting groups, what is empowered by these laws is the political majority. What the majority does with the laws is favor or punish speech according to their views and prejudices. The actual views and social status of the protected groups is incidental to the entire process.Another matter I would note is the ugly modern history of the British Libel laws. In my opinion, exceptions created to open speech inevitably don't work to the good. They are as often as not a means by which the powerful can crush the weak through the law.I personally think that hate speech should be dealt with through the concepts of individual harm and individual damage. I don't think that inventing metaphysical "group" rights into the law as regards speech is a workable idea. Damages have to be measurable and cannot be abstracted. In particular, nobody in an open society has a right to be protected from having their feelings hurt.Waldon tries somewhat to deal the hurt feelings issue by trying to wrap his ideas in an idea of social standing. That its ok to hurt feelings, but not social standing. But rather than a solid principle, that only seems to lead to arbitrary enforcement based on whatever groups the majority in society deems worthy of protection. In the end, I am left less than convinced of any justification for these changes to the law. The harm done by trying to regulate hate speech seems as if it will be far worse than the status quo. I also find it difficult to credit the idea that European countries are more advanced in their thinking on these subjects. I've mentioned before the atrocity of the British Libel laws. France is just as bad in that the system seems completely arbitrary if not outright political in restricting speech. In Germany, a comedian is arrested for mocking the President of Turkey. And even more recently Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft have agreed to speech restrictions in Europe. The new innovation is that the actual censorship is to be outsourced to a large degree to non-governmental organizations. The organizations will be considered "trusted reporters" of what speech is to be banned. This will in essence allow the companies to create a process where speech can be censored by third parties with no real possibility of appeal even to the companies themselves. The censored will lack the knowledge of who is responsible for the censorship decisions.Worse yet, the "code of conduct" suggests a role for both the companies and the governments to identify and promote "counter narratives" through their services. Propaganda always being the sibling of censorship. Closer ties to law enforcement is of course also in the agreement.

Absolutely ridiculous book and premise.

As I expected, it is nonsense.

I weep for the future. The future that is the Orwellian nightmare of children in universities needing "safe" spaces because someone chalked Trump on the sidewalk of Emery University. When police and DA's get to ad on years to a sentence because someone yelled and ethnic slur while kicking the .... out of you. As if the physical pain is somehow worse ( don't bother the so called psychological pain is in your head). When scum like bobby kkkenedy wants to charge you under the RICO act because you don't agree with his views on global warming. Big brother is winning and this book is just another brick in the wall

Bottom Line: In the Bully Pulpit, Professor Doris Goodwin has written a bloated but worthy read. Using the lives and presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt and Howard Taft as the center; she combines shorter biographies and a partial history of the Progressive movement in Republican politics. A second major theme is a biography of Samuel McClure, his magazine, the people he lead and how together they created the golden age of journalism. There is a lot of book, a lot to discuss and Prof. Goodwin needed a better editor in getting it into one volume. The Bully Pulpit is recommended, but are cautioned that this is a longer book than needed.New to me was that President Teddy Roosevelt had invented the term ‘Bully Pulpit”. His use of the slang word ‘Bully’ indicated that something was good, grander than a more modern person might say “Nifty”. To Roosevelt the Bully Pulpit was a very good place to be heard and thereby command public attention. He also coined the word ‘Muckraker’. From the beginning a harsh term to suggest that a journalist so employed was shoveling farm yard waste, to create scandal and distrust where it was not justifiable.Prof. Goodwin’s purpose is to compare how effectively President Roosevelt combined his use of the bully pulpit with his openness to certain of the muckrakers, specifically the McClure’s stable of investigative reporters. She contrasts this with President Taft’s more limited use of the bully pulpit and more traditional use of political discourse to forward their common cause: the Republican Progressive movement. The difference would be one of degree rather than absolute. Each would have to take some causes directly to the people and each would have to make some compromises. Indeed there is an unanswered question suggested by Roosevelt, that Taft had compromised too much.Had this book been focused more on this topic, it would have been a better book. Instead Professor Good win gives us a detailed biography of the two men, much of it available in purpose built biographies. The extensive backgrounds on the team behind McClure, particularly Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens and William Allen White was interesting if over much. Roosevelt promoted close relationships with his favored journalists. Another example of how TR was a man of the future and is germane to the author’s larger questions.Goodwin’s certainly dares greatly. She does achieve her goals. She asks us to strive through too many pages.

The concept of this book is basically to present simultaneously (a) a biography of T.R.; (b) a biography of William Howard Taft; and (c) a general non-fiction book (like Simon Winchester might do) about McClure's magazine; and in fact (d) mini-bios of several McClure's writers. That seems both very audacious in scope, and difficult as far as tying all that together in a cohesive manner. Improbably, Goodwin makes it work brilliantly. Probably the key ingredient is her exposition of the access and relationships that the McClure's writers had to T.R., and the synergy thus created; plus contrasting how things changed under Taft. The book is extremely long, so if you're short of attention span, consider that. I prefer richly detailed narrative (as long as it's not aimless or wandering) rather than glossing over things to shorten a book up, so the fact that this took me 6 weeks to read was no problem for me. (It is exhaustively end-noted, by the way, for those interested. When you finish the book's main pages, you will be only at 56% through on the Kindle's progress meter.) Like many readers, I have previously read a T.R. biography or two, but I did not find this book repetitive or redundant to those, given its angle on T.R.'s career and given all the Taft and McClure's content. Really a master work, and a great read that lets you lose yourself in the turn-of-the-century era for quite awhile.

It's too long, repetitive and redundant. It's a shame because there is a lot of great material but you have to wade through an overwhelming amount of minutiae along the way. The book is definitely at its best in the first 200 pages of so when it deals with the early lives of Taft and Roosevelt. It falls into repetitive, drawn-out mode once Taft and Roosevelt begin their political ascents.Once the two men are in their prime, the book repeatedly follows the same lifeless, mechanical pattern to convey events. Goodwin will briefly summarize something of note that Roosevelt or Taft did, and then recite what everyone else in the world said about it. For example: (a) Roosevelt made a campaign speech; (b) here's what Roosevelt wrote about the speech in his diary; (b) and here's what Edith wrote about the speech in a letter to her sister; (c) and here's what Taft wrote about the speech in a note to Roosevelt; (d) and here's what Ida Tarbell wrote about the speech in a letter to McClure; (d) and here's what newspaper 1 wrote about the speech; (e) and here's what newspaper 2 wrote about the speech..... (z) here's what newspaper 12 wrote about the speech. This goes on and on and on for nearly every public achievement of Roosevelt, Taft and a half dozen muckrakers. It gets old and very boring. Also, it's odd that Goodwin gives almost no commentary herself on what made certain achievements or events special. She doesn't bring a historian's perspective to the material, she just recites what happened and quotes the remarks of all the players ad nauseum. The only exception is in those early chapters about young Roosevelt and Taft, in which she does read between the lines here and there when dissecting letters and diary entries.I finished the book on principle, I made it all the way to page 750. But I resented it and nearly quit several times because, hey, there are other books to read and at some point you have to get on with your life. I've never read Team of Rivals, but I'll be taking that off my "Books to Read" list as a result of this experience.
