Many books have been written for middle school students about the Jews in Nazi Germany. In Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport, Emma Carlson Berne shares a piece of their story with children aged 8-12. As a teacher I could certainly see this book also being used as a resource for older students who are reading below grade level as it has an interest level appropriate to them as well. The physical book is designed with the look and feel of an aging family picture album. There are seven chapters that focus on individual children who were part of the 10,000 children rescued from Nazi controlled areas and relocated to the United Kingdom prior to the beginning of World War II. Their story is told in the third person but from the child’s perspective. The first chapter begins with a poem “The Leather Suitcase” written by Tom Berman who was saved as a 5 year old child by a Kindertransport. Some background is given as it describes what it must have been like for such a young boy to be separated from his parents for a long trip to an unfamiliar country with a different language, not knowing if he would ever see them again. This chapter captures the reader’s interest immediately. The next chapter, “From Kristallnacht to Kindertransport,” gives more historical details about the increasing persecution of the Jews and their limited options for survival. Then the book returns to the stories of individual children, ending with a chapter that briefly recounts what happened to each child after the Kindertransport. It might be specifics of their time living with another family, further emigration, or an ultimate career, depending on their circumstances and the source documents available. There is also general statistical information about the 10,000 children of the Kindertransport. There are study resources at the end of the book. The “Timeline” integrates important historical dates of the war with major events related to the Kindertransport and the seven children whose rescues are detailed in the book. The “Glossary,” of course, defines unfamiliar terms such as “haftarah” and “pogrom” which are used in the book. Next is a page which explains The Kindertransport Association (KTA), whose president was a consultant for the book. The KTA is comprised of the rescued Kinders, as they call themselves, and their descendants. “Read More” lists three more books on the topic for young readers. There is a page of discussion questions to evoke higher level thinking and several pages devoted to bibliography, source notes, and an index.Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport is a valuable teaching resource, drawing from original sources. The length of the chapters is appropriate for this age level as well as for typical time periods in the school day. It could be used for independent reading or group study, but because of the difficult nature of the subject matter and the age of the intended reader, I definitely suggest adult support. The author handles the ugly reality of Nazi Germany with restraint without hiding the brutal truths of beatings, interments, and death. Being drawn into their stories will be troubling for some youngsters, especially those for whom this is their introduction to Holocaust studies.I highly recommend Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport as an integrative teaching tool combining reading with social studies, especially history and geography. It abounds with possibilities for discussions to stretch young thinkers to make make new connections and offers opportunities for deep enrichment of vocabulary. Even as an adult, I found the book well written, interesting, and a source of new learning.I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Capstone Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Capstone Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Escaping the Nazis on the Kinderstransport. This is my honest opinion of the book. With personal narratives and recollections dotting the pages, Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport is the story of some of the ten thousand Jewish children. Rescued from Nazi occupied Germany and other surrounding areas, the children were brought to the United Kingdom from 1938 until 1940. The children, babies on up to the age of 17, were placed on all modes of transportation without supervision or guidance. Their transport had to be paid by private citizens or aid organizations, as the British government needed to stay neutral on the subject. Great Britain was allowed by Germany to accept the children, as they were not wanted by their homeland. Britain would not grant them citizenship, but the temporary visas would keep them in the country until the war was over. The first kindertransport arrived in Harwich, England on December 2, 1938. The last transport from Germany was in September 1939 and the last from the Netherlands was in May of 1940. Through the stories of Tom Berman, Kurt Fuchel, Harry Ebert, Irene Schmeid, Hans Schneider, Ursula Rosenfeld, and Jack Hellman, readers are able to appreciate both the scale of the operation and its effectiveness.Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport was written with younger readers in mind, as the stories definitely show a more uplifting side instead of just the horrors. I would recommend this to younger readers or for adults to use to get acquainted with the subject matter.

Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport is a good book. It is historical non-fiction about the Kindertransport, a train that saved a lot of people during the years leading up to World War 2. It is short but well written and has many pictures. The book tells the stories of many people who survived on the Kindertransport and then tells about what happened to them after the war. One of them wrote a poem about the Kindertransport. There are also some quotes from the survivors. I would suggest this book for ages 8 to 13 as it is dark but short. 4 stars out of 5.Joshua B, age 14, GLAAM

This is a very informative and interesting book, telling the stories of 7 of the more than 10,000 children who were sent out of Germany to refuge in Britain on the eve of World War II. Their brave parents put them on trains, not knowing if they would ever see them again, and in many cases they didn't. The children grew up to be successful citizens, however, and were grateful for their rescue. I received a free ecopy of this book from NetGalley and chose to write an honest review.

I received a free electronic copy of this work from Netgalley, Emma Carlson Berne, and Capstone, Capstone Press in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, for sharing your work with me.This is an excellent book for tweenies and teens - possibly even younger children. It explains the kindertransport and the reasons behind it and the night of breaking glass without graphic details. The photos of the children and their parents that were packed in their suitcases before they were placed on the train are exquisite. The fact that they never got to see their parents again is heartbreaking.

In an age of instant everything it seems fitting that every once in a Blue Moon one chances upon a book like this. Painstakingly assembled over a period of several decades the images in this book will serve to time immemorial as witness to the age of the steam train. No one need ever wonder, "What were they like these powerful mechanical beasts that huffed and puffed their way cross continents?" due to the powerful images that grace the pages of "A Steam Odyssey." While it's true that photographs can not precisely duplicate the experience which they record truly great photos can come pretty darn close.Victor Hand's stunning images of trains and the lands through which they traveled...and in some countries travel still... fall into this category. Someone once wrote, "It was a time, it was a place, it was a sound! Things were lost, other's found." Thanks to the dedication of Victor Hand the history of steam locomotives throughout the world will not ever be lost...and for those willing to spend some time with his book, much remains to be found!

Victor Hand has been around. When steam was dying in the U.S.A. he was there, when steam was flourishing in the U.K., Japan, South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and the remnants of the old U.S.S.R. he was there. For over 60 years Mr. Hand has been taking portraits and action photographs of steam locomotives. What sets him apart is the extraordinary technical skills he brings to his photography. His technique is reminiscent of Ansel Adams, everything in focus, finely balanced composition, and powerful awareness of the landscape and skyscape. "Perfection is the enemy of the good" reads Voltaire, but he gave Victor Hand a pass with respect to railroad photography.

Beautiful book. Black & white photos in wonderful detail. Takes you around the world in steam locomotive history. Hand is an industry expert who has traveled the world for more than 30 years to work with railroads and capture images of the massive locomotives that power them.

If you like traditional large-format black and white rail photography -- or just good photography -- Victor Hand is a master, and it shows in this book. Some of the material is familiar but much is new and exciting.

Good book. Nice photos.

Best train book ever. Photographs are not only extraordinary but provides a perspective on railroads around the world. I think so highly of this masterpiece that I have purchased over 12 copies to give to special friends.RGPerryWashington DC

About as good as it gets for someone who loves railroads - especially steam! Great photography, as Hand has any eye for the emotional impact of photos!

A super high quality book by a master photographer of steam power around the World. Sit back and enjoy Hand's beautiful images of steam in action.

fantastic read!

It is always fascinating to read what experts have concluded from a microscopic examination of a work of art. They put things in historical perspective, in biblical context, and find similarities and anomalies, dialectic conundrums, support and contradiction - where I see or hear beauty. So I appreciate the different perspective. This book is the latest collection from Fredric Jameson, as erudite, expert and analytical as any author ever has been. He analyses artists, film directors, novels, films and tv shows. Some of them you’ve even heard of.He follows a dictum of Thomas Mann: “Only the exhaustive is truly interesting.” (He quotes it twice.) These then are substantially all of Jameson’s thoughts on these works, including the references, tangents, asides and free associations. They are piled high and thick.Reading The Ancient and the Postmodern was like stepping into an alternate universe, where nothing was as it seemed to the naked eye and the unsharpened mind. Jameson’s intensive scrutiny is otherworldly and so granular as to be mystifying. Sometimes you no longer remember what was under consideration. It is filled with dense references, facts and mysterious sentences like: “Leitmotif is the scar left by destiny on the musical present.”Jameson’s obvious passion is Wagner and Mahler. Their era redefined music. He has seen their works multiple times, can distinguish different directors’ productions and different performers’ interpretations. He links them to past present and future, moral values, trends, fashions, and the tangents of adaptations. They get about a third of the book. The central theme is: like a black hole at the center of every galaxy, works of art “must have a contradiction at their center in order to win any value.” This colors his approach to everything. Whether or not it is valid is beyond the scope. The irony, if there is one, is that Jameson looks at the macro period from the Baroque to the present in the tiniest micro increments, dwelling on fine details in every medium. Drawing historic conclusions from this approach is impossible. His Marxist credentials are on vivid display, which is the major reason most readers would want this book. But his text is so much more dense than say, the accessible Marxist Slavoj Zizek. It doesn’t inspire further reading. Having read the in-depth appreciations of all these artists and authors, I have no desire to rush out and acquire any of their works, which is normally how my reading branches out. It is nonetheless, a remarkable ride.David Wineberg

In this work, Fredric Jameson essentially performs a massive compare and contrast exercise between modernism and postmodernism. His examples are examined extensively for locations of a call and respond, a postmodern response to a modernist call.Aside from any overarching thesis in the book, the close readings of the various 'texts', from paintings and music to film, are well worth the time and effort given to them. Jameson is an accessible but not simplistic writer. The book is meant to be a discussion with the reader which means some effort is needed. But with the effort comes new perspectives on works mostly familiar with a few lesser known works thrown in.I will revisit this book again and fully expect to gain new insights yet again.Reviewed from an ARC made available by the publisher via NetGalley.
