This is a very good print of a most holy book, which has been translated by a professional. It includes a very well written (almost 40 page) overview of the material and is put together extremely well. My only complaint, (if any), is that the book itself is wider than normal, so it sticks out much further than the other books on my shelf, hahaha. If you are Jewish or Christian, you need to read this book even if you don't believe all of the material. It is a good Ethiopian history lesson and reveals much about their faith. It presents another story not found in the traditional Bible but does not contradict anything, in some cases it enhances the story and makes it more understandable! I don't think you will be disappointed if you make this purchase.

Budge is the one to buy if you want to see the African interpretation of the Biblical stories. They claim the Ark went back to Ethiopiawith the son of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba as a blessing from God as he removed His blessings from Israel. Also seem to think the lineage of Christ is from Solomon (Joseph's lineage and not Nathan (Mary's lineage) as the Bible states. It is good reading if you use discernment and already understand truths from the Bible.Enjoyed it.

Unlike most of the conventional Bible, I found the Kebra Nagast to be beautiful reading. Not only for what it says, but for how it says it. It depicts human beings with all their flaws and anguish, as well as their virtues and their struggles to serve God. There are a few parts, such as Solomon's blessing of his son Menelik, that made me cry. It is a treasure that most people don't know about (at least Americans don't), and should be read by all Christians, or anybody else for that matter. Having said that, as far as this edition goes, I have to say that it has some flaws. There are many typos which, if a new edition is published, should be corrected, as some of them are obvious and give the impression that the publisher is just sloppy. The other puzzling thing is that although the Kebra is about the time of Solomon, all the illustrations are depictions of Mary and Jesus. What's up with that?

This is an excellent accessible reprint of the famous Oxford Univ Press translation by Sir E. A. Wallis Budge, perhaps the foremost Egyptologist and archaeolinguist of the late 19th Century. It retells the Ethiopian legend of the founding of the "Solomonic" dynasty, which only ended with the demise of Emperor Haille Selassie I, and the insistent "proof" provided by the presence of a hidden artifact in the Sanctuary Chapel at Mariam Tseyon in Axum, said to be the original Ark of the Covenant. This edition suffers somewhat in omitting Budge's 50-odd page introductory essay, which was rich in historical background and knowledgeable commentary. The interesting part for many, the famed romance between King Solomon and Queen Makeda, is somewhat glossed as the scribe/deacon was in no little hurry to provde a patent of the divine right to rule for the then-current monarch. Scholars might find useful query in whether there is evidence of an older (pre-Christian tale) with interpolations later made to "Christianize" it as the religion of the aristocracy in Ethiopia changed, which might indicate the pedigree of the tale. This is the legend prompting many current sects' preaching of Afrocentric ownership of <"true"> Judaism and Christianity -and Rastafarianism (Haille Selassie's given name was Ras Tafari). Persons looking for a good romance will find here the foundations for Ms. Janice Dennie's series of historical romances such as "Moon Goddess; the Queen of Sheba" and the forthcoming "Menyelik the Conquering Lion" -also available through Amazon!

Excellent book and must read about the ancient history of Ethiopia! The book was translated into English from manuscripts that are HUNDREDS of years old, and which were written in the native Ethiopic / Ge'ez writing script. Ethiopia is very unique in the sense that it is one of the few African civilizations that had its own indigenous writing before Europeans came to Africa.

A very important piece of literature necessary to understand Ethiopian culture and history.

I would have given this book zero stars but 1 was the lowest allowed. This is a total cheap rip off chop job reprint. I could take the corn ball dread lock guys pasted on the cover with green crowns on their heads but they don't tell you that they have completely left out Budge's introducti0n. I had to go find it on line and download it (the whole book is online by the way, if you care to read/ print it).The typface is in at least two different fonts. How they got an actual photograph of Makeda, the legendary Queen of Sheba is beyond me.When you look through the index, they have left in all the references to the missing introduction so there are all these entries in roman numerals that do not exist.Give me a break.

Really enjoyed this book. The translation and editing was done really well for such a old text. Now I understand why there is such a strong Jewish presence in Ethiopia. It also explains why the people of this country were so receptive to Christianity. Since they were well aware of the prophecies concerning the Messiah, they would have understood that Jesus fulfilled them. Also enjoyed reading about a women who was a queen in such ancient times.

Reading the Bible with the Damned, by Bob Ekblad

From the Back Cover

"This book by Ekblad Â…moves the Bible away from safe, conventional church venues and reads afresh among the alienated and marginalized. The effect of such a new interpretive context is that the text takes on a poignancy and sharpness that bespeaks the stirring of GodÂ’s spirit. We may be led by Ekblad to read the Bible yet again, as if for the first time." --Walter Brueggemann, Professor Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary, and author of several Westminster John Knox Press books, including An Introduction to the Old Testament: The Canon and Christian Imagination and Reverberations of Faith: A Theological Handbook of Old Testament Themes. "Bob Ekblad is more like Jesus than most people I knowÂ…How different the world will be when more of us share ChristÂ’s life and heart in the same way. I say when, not if, because this book will hasten the transformation." --Marva J. Dawn, Teaching Fellow in Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia, and author of Unfettered Hope: A Call to Faithful Living in an Affluent Society and Powers, Weakness, and the Tabernacling of God. "Bob Ekblad has raised an ominously serious questionÂ…what does the Bible say to the suffering down our street - across our town and city - and out in the fields where our supermarkets get our produce? The responses are both enlightening and challenging, and Ekblad has written a book to teach all of us about the Bible, faith and liberation, and the realities of our own social system." --Daniel L. Smith-Christopher, Professor of Old Testament, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, and author of A Biblical Theology of Exile.

An interesting perspective -- God is on the side of those at the margins, and we should be too. Taken to extremes sometimes? Made me think of grace and mercy in new ways (and in that sense, reminded me of Yancey's "What's So Amazing About Grace?"). Plenty of food for thought. I want to discuss it with my friends in the criminal justice system. Also raised lots of questions about hermenuetics for me -- I think we do filter our reading of the Bible through our own lenses and this book seemed to suggest we be more aware and intentional about what filters we are using. I don't think his suggested filters were always as biblical as what he states, but it was a valuable perspective that I don't often hear.

I'm reading this book wondering why I've never heard of Bob Ekblad before. His insight is new and thoughtful and provocative. His experience in studying the Bible with those on the fringes of society has made me rethink several familiar and well known Bible stories -- I love that! Be prepared to think and re-think as you read through this book. Even if you don't agree at every turn, you will surely have some things to chew on for a good, long while. And that's good reading!

I appreciate his point of view and attempts to bring marginalized people hope, but think a number of his interpretations ignore historical context and sometimes context in general. In other words, I don't think all the texts he uses say what he interprets them to say. But he presents a very good way of "reading" the Bible: to read it from the viewpoint of very marginalized people.

I knew I had to read this book after feeling weepy perusing a scholarly paper that was in large part based on Ekblad's work. And I'm not at all disappointed that I did. Just to place my response: I'm a Bebbington evangelical who regularly reads much broader than my own views, a charismatic, and a political moderate who wishes to see immigration reform. Although I have *major* reservations about some of Bob's premises and conclusions, there is much to love here. It's a very worthwhile book for someone who's read a good deal of theology already and wants to be shaken up a bit regarding how it applies to real life and, specifically, life on the margins (the indigent, the incarcerated, and the illegal aliens). I think I will avoid loaning the book to Calvinists (ironically, since Bob is PCUSA), those who believe penal substitution is the only valuable way to read the work of the cross, and those who are gung ho right wing politically or whose families are quite tied to the judicial or law enforcement system (which are depicted almost exclusively as evil powers). But those who read and think broadly (even if they toe a conservative line) will appreciate some of the insights into scripture, find themselves cheering campesinas and inmates on as they connect the dots on how Scripture applies to their lives, and be strengthened in the conjunction of their spiritual and sociopolitical skills--more able to see the needs of people who live between the lines of the dominant voices. Bob is trying to coach readers in an open and maximally unintimidating method of Bible study that could encourage and inspire people ministering in a much wider variety of contexts (for instance, the wealthy unchurched).

Fascinating look at the sociological meaning of scripture from those marginalized in society. Learned lots. Recommended book for a church study.

Great book!

I read this book for two reasons: as a reference for comparison to my own experiences in jail ministry, and for spiritual guidance in creatively using God's word to minister to the hearts of those incarcerated. This book fulfilled both objectives. Highly recommended.

Thought provoking

Have you ever heard of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events? Things start out fine, but then get worse and worse. Well, this story is a bit like that with events that begin very well, but then there are surprise twists and turns that seem to get worse and worse. But the best part about this book is that it is the Christian version and so much more upbeat, with a terrific ending. You will not be disappointed.Hannah was alone this Christmas. Her family was off enjoying a Colorado ski trip where she should be, but since she was assistant manager at the local grocery store, and the manager had just had a family emergency, she was next in line to supervise. On this Christmas Eve, she was feeling a bit sorry for herself when a kind, motherly customer she saw in the store regularly invited to attend Christmas Eve services with her. She wouldn't take no for an answer either. That was the beginning of an incredible journey for Hannah.Jason McKenzie is a star. His rock band, Out of the Blue, was a teen favorite. But living on the road was exhausting and from time to time he'd come home for a respite. He showed up on Christmas Eve and was immediately enchanted with Hannah. One of the things I like most about this story, besides the fact that it's a Christmas story, is the humor infused in the tale. There's a laugh around every corner. It's good clean humor and makes this story just perfect.Second, this story means more when you read the history behind the writing of this tale. I love reading where authors get their ideas. This one has a wee bit of truth and a bunch of fun fabrication. And this is one of those books that doesn't lose its appeal when you read it the second time or third time. That's my kind of book!

This is not my first Diane Moody book and it certainly will not be my last! If you are tired of purchasing books and being turned off by the graphic sex scenes, this is the author for you. Her books are so interesting without all the smut added. Blue Christmas is about a young college student working in a grocery store on Christmas Eve. Laura, the mother of one of the members of a famous chart topper rock band! Laura realizes that the young lady checking her out, does not have anyone to spend Christmas with. Laura, immediately invites Hanna to her home, which turns out to be a masterpiece! , Unexpectedly, Laura's son comes home for Christmas along with the rest of his band . They all end up spending their Christmas together! Believe me, that is just the beginning of the story. There are all kinds of things that happen, but I am not going to spoil it for you! If you haven't read the book, you will just lhave to curl up for the pure pleasure of reading a good, fast paced book!! Hope that you enjoy !!!

What can I say; This was a story around Christmas that took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. First, Hannah was going to be all alone at Christmas, missing a trip with her parents, because her boss needed her to take over managing the grocery store, due to a death in his family. Then her last customer of the evening ends up inviting her to spend Christmas Eve with her family, and going to Christmas Eve services and then dinner and their son was to join them. Hannah didn't want to intrude, but Laura and Frank made her feel so at home and welcomed. Their home was so beautiful, yet so welcoming and comfortable, she even felt like she was part of the family. Then, their son comes home. Jason comes bounding in through the front door calling to his Mom & Dad to come meet someone. Oh geesh, is Hannah going to be a third wheel with him bring a girlfriend home....well maybe if what ever attacked her would stop slobbering all over her face as she squirmed to get a breath. As the laughter settles when the little pup is picked up, Hannah trying to dry her face, all to stop breathing again as it registered who the son was. Before her stood an little older version of the young man that use to be on the posters she plastered on her bedroom walls, as a teen.Needless to say, another hill on the rollercoaster.I get pulled into the story from the beginning and enjoying every step and butterflies in the stomach, all to be thrown into tears and sobs, and then heartache from heartbreak, back to happiness and happily ever after. I ended the story feeling happily exhausted, with puffy eyes. I couldn't put the book down, except when I had to wipe the tears so I could continue to read.If an author can put me through the whole book of emotions; That's a Great Read! Well done!

This read like fanfic to me - not a “real” novel. Others have loved it, and I don’t blame them, it isn’t terrible. However, I like a book where I can fall in love alongside the characters, but they are in love almost instantly, and I felt like 80% of the book was spent NOT with the main characters. So, I was quite bored and ended up just skimming the last half. It was pretty trite, with nothing unexpected. I won’t be reading any more from this author. It was absolutely clean, with just a few kisses. I honestly would expect adults to have a bit more interest in kissing, but as this was a mom writing for her daughter I got the feeling she wouldn’t want to give her daughter ideas.

I strongly encourage you to purchase this guide if you are studying for the GRE. This book walks you through each type of question and teaches you tghe tricks that the test may throw at you as well as some tricks of your own on how to answer questions with words you don't know or how to make a math problem easy/quick. It takes some time to get through the whole book, but I feel it is worth it! I feel like I know what I will be up against on test day and am prepared to take it.

I used this book to study for about a month before I took the GRE. While the ideas and content of the book were good, I was very, very annoyed by the amount of typos. I could have forgiven this, but many of them where in the math section where the right number or symbol was important to know. Very, very, frustrating. Because I have only used Kaplan study materials, I'm not sure what else is out there, but it might be worth looking into. In general, I can't say I recommend this book.

Ok for learning GRE test taking techniques. I thought Princeton Review had better techniques, but Kaplan had better questions and quizzes were longer and more complete. It cannot make studying fun, because this is a BORING test for which to study!I did OK on the quant, but might have done a little better if studying for the test was not so mind-numbing.I scored 1460/1600 which is good, but I was hoping for a better quantitative score. Results were:Quant 760/800 = 86th percentile.Verbal 700/800 = 97th percentile.Did Kaplan help? Certainly. But I thought that the techniques for some test portions, esp analogies, were better dealt with in Princeton Review.

This book has a lot of great resources and suggestions to improve your study techniques. If you give yourself enough time before the test it makes an incredible difference.

This is a great book that covers all subject areas with both a review of the material tested and the introduction of useful strategies. I use this book when I tutor my GRE students.

This product arrived on time and perfect, it is very comprehensive and does cover everything from strategy to types of questions to practice questions.

I studied for about a week before the GRE using this book. It is very well written, very easy to understand, and it has great pointers! The short cuts they show you are absolutely helpful! The list of words most commonly seen on the GRE is dead on, I saw many of them on there. I also see many of them in the scholarly articles I read in class. This was my second time taking the GRE (my first time was two years ago). I was able to raise my score 180 points! This is the only study method I used. Well, that and the prometric testing center sends a CD that has additional review questions...use that as well! It gives you the practice questions in the format used for the electronic test....so you can get aquainted early. Also, the math review on the practice CD was wonderful in addition to the math review in this book! Good luck!

This is a very good book for vocabulary. It has also a very good math section, much better than Princeton's Cracking. It goes deeper on the math, when people who are doing very well on the exam get tougher questions. In my opinion it could be more objective (as Cracking is), more concise, but it's a very good book too.

I moved to Kansas City for the summer, and bought this guide in preparation for my trip. Am I glad I did! It gave me some great ideas for things to do and places to eat and shop that I would never have found on my own. So far the author's recommendations have been solid, and a lot of the "off the beaten path" places have been preferable to the big-name tourist attractions. If you are moving to Kansas City or visiting there on vacation, I highly recommend picking up this book before you go.

I have lived and then visited KC numerous times and I still learned about places I did not know existed! Ryan has done an excellent job with her research and her writing!

Basic and with not much information. The printing seemed very cheap too. Disappointing. I would not recommend it.

Very helpful as I was in Kansas City for business. I found excellent restaurants and where to go after my conference was over for the day. Thank you!

Hopefully it will serve me well when I'm in KC. Time will tell.

OK

Finding myself in Kansas City with some time on my hands, I picked up this Moon book to get the most out of it. It was a good investment. The city is more spread out than Saint Louis and so is not as well suited for just walking around and seeing what's what. I wanted some specifics. And I got them. MOON KANSAS CITY pointed me in the right direction for some good jazz clubs (like Jardine's, but call ahead first to ensure the schedule), good barbecue, book stores, sights and monuments. Happily I discovered through this book a microbrewery other than Boulevard Brewing (which I can get outside of the city), specifically 75th Street Brewery. When I needed a place to grab some coffee and relax a bit, this guide pointed me to The Roasterie (though on a sour note, it should also have pointed out the Filling Station, a wonderful coffee `garage' on McGee Trafficway). And as a fan of greasy spoons, it is unlikely I would have gotten to enjoy a burger at Town Topic if I had left myself to my own devices. The only clunker I came across was the recommendation of Mama's 39th for breakfast, which, alas, stunk.I also hit a few nooks and alleys of Kansas City with a bit of a cluster of interesting shops after being pointed there by MOON KANSAS CITY. Further, as I did not have enough time to hit all the cultural institutions, this book helped me choose that, mainstream though it may be, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art was the one to go with. The book sells here on amazon for about the price of a cheap diner meal. It is hard not to conclude it is worth the price when it tells you which diner to visit once you are there.

This is an excellent book, filled with great tips, tons of information and totally packed with great ideas when it comes to exploring Kansas City, finding new adventures, places to experience, etc. Katy Ryan obviously knows what she's doing (and knows where to find the good stuff) - if you don't own this book yet, you're missing out! I've lived in Kansas City for 20+ years now and still don't know half of the great stuff she's packed this book with. Buy it. NOW!!!!

Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of March 2016: In 1980, more than a thousand feet disappeared from the top of Mt. St Helens in a moment of stunning power, decapitating the mountain and leveling miles of old growth forest in a shockwave of boiling ash. 57 lives we lost within minutes, and yet the disaster didn't come without warning: the prior two months saw the volcano awaken in a series of earthquakes, ash plumes, and a massive, growing bulge on the north face looming ominously over Spirit Lake and the valleys below. Why was anyone there at all? Steve Olson's Eruption examines the forces at work--volcanic, economic, political, and historical--to tell a story at both geologic and human scales, documenting in thrilling fashion the demise of an iconic landscape as well as those who witnessed it: who they were, why they were there, and what they experienced when the earth opened and the sky fell. --Jon Foro

Review

“As Steve Olson reminds us in his vividly reported new history . . . what happened on May 18, 1980, in the primordial thickets of the Pacific Northwest, was an enormous, multi-faceted event. . . This engaging book maneuvers deftly along the way toward impact.” - Mark Damsker, USA Today“Olson intercuts stories of victims including David Johnston, the volcanologist who was monitoring the explosion, with an account of its impact on science―such as popularizing the use of lidar. With 1,500 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, this is an urgent reminder of the need for advances in the field.” - Nature“In Mr. Olson’s telling, [the survivors’] stories read like urgent fiction….These vignettes lend a human face to an event that has become associated largely with geology.” - Michael O'Donnell, Wall Street Journal“In his evocative and convincing new book, author Steve Olson reveals that the eruption―the most powerful natural disaster to ever strike the US―is much more than a horror show.…He has a bigger picture in mind, one of the eruption’s role as a touchstone for an evolving society and natural world.” - Randy Dotinga, Christian Science Monitor“Olson brings cinematic structure to descriptions of the events surrounding the eruption of Mount St. Helens….[A] detailed and human-centered look at a terrible disaster.” - Publisher's Weekly“A first-class, meticulously crafted piece of reportage that is as exciting as it is informative―and will long stand as a classic of descriptive narrative of the biggest American volcanic eruption of all our lifetimes―or so we all hope!” - Simon Winchester, author of Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded“Olson and his truly groundbreaking Eruption join a rarefied pantheon, where readers can come to understand the most dramatic geological event of our time. This book, as welcome as it is amazing in the depth of its background and the strength of its storytelling, will stand as a stirring and stilling accomplishment.” - Robert Michael Pyle, author of Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land and Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide

"Eruption" by Steve Olson brought back many vivid memories. In 1980 my family and I lived in Yakima, about 80 miles northeast of Mt. St. Helens. That Sunday morning (our 12th wedding anniversary) the blackest cloud I have ever seen descended on our area turning day into night. Most frustrating was the absence of any survival information. Was the ash toxic? What about our outdoor animals? How long would it last? The radio didn't help and there was no 24/7 cable news. For lack of anything else to do, we filled a bath tub with water. House guests from Seattle, a three hour drive away, finally left Monday bypassing the ash cloud in a 7 hour roundabout trip through Portland. I wrote a magazine article about how one of our local hospitals coped with the ash and difficulty of staffers in getting to work. Our only casualty was a Samoyed dog that refused to come into the crowded house at the height of the ash fall. She later developed a severe cough and was diagnosed with silicosis of the lungs from inhaling the ash. She had to be euthanized. Almost 36 years later we are reminded of that day whenever we encounter an ash layer a few inches down when planting a tree or flowers.

I had a lot of thoughts/emotions throughout this generally awesome book:~Excitement to read it. I visited the remains of Mt. St. Helens when I was 9. I periodically love volcanoes.~Frustration. Over 50 of the first 139 pages are backstory on the Weyerhaeuser family/company for the past 100 years, and the very in-depth history of the forest service. Both could have been done in 5 or 10 imo)~Incredulity. The mountain developed a rapidly (and constantly) growing bulge on its side for weeks leading up to the explosion but very few seemed to recognize the severity or significance of this... Olson put it best in regards to lessons learned at Mt. St. Helens: "No one will ever again blithely and knowingly watch the side of a volcano bulge out like a balloon ready to pop and expect to outrun the ensuing catastrophe." -p232~Suspense. Olson took the timeline back and forth, both within the almost 2 months of activity leading up to the eruption and the personal stories of some of those affected by the blast.~Impatience. Olson took the timeline back and forth A LOT in the first half of the book.~Suspense (again) and mounting dread. He started referring to certain people in the past tense, and as I had not memorized the list of those who died before reading this the deaths and survivals were genuinely surprising to me.*giggle*"'It was like going to the land of Mordor,' said one logger." -p203~Validation. Take that, loggers! Clearly leaving the downed trees where they lay would result in faster recovery/renewal of the scorched surroundings! I kind of wanted to shout at the corporate interests in their haste to "not waste" the trees to rot. Not-at-all-shockingly, "The habitats that have recovered fastest are those that were left in disarray." -237About halfway through I was also kind of overwhelmed with just pure interest in the story and enjoyment of Olson's writing. I felt that wonderful compulsion to keep reading and ignore everything else to see how it all turns out (spoiler alert, the volcano explodes).Olson does a great job of creating a compelling narrative around this recent historical event and I really liked the book, learned a lot about volcanoes (now I want to be a volcanologist), and came to care for some of the real people highlighted in the personal stories. He blends political maneuvering, history and a natural disaster, personal stories, conservation hot-topics, and individual family histories and creates a genuinely enjoyable read. I have been talking about this book with my friends and family far more than I expected.Because I can't just be happy, if I had to give one more very minor complaint (which doesn't really count as a complaint, but more a back-handed compliment) it is that it did not contain more stories about the people who were near the mountain, both the survivors and those who died. Olson does such a fantastic job with most of those he does include that I found myself wanting to know more. Along those same lines, I would have loved to have the end of the book provide more information about those who survived and their lives since. I know not everyone will want to share any of that (I can't begin to imagine how traumatic that was), but as a reader I am sorry Eruption did not include at least footnotes on more of the people it focused on in the earlier parts of the books. Most impressively, he somehow created a text about a volcano that is both informative and accessible --something that I have recently (today) discovered to be VERY rare.I received an advance copy of this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaways program.

This is a very good book. The research is exhaustive, and the author appears to have gone to considerable lengths to talk to survivors, witnesses, scientists, policy makers and others who lived through the event and helped to shape the response. It's been 35 years since the blast, so Mr. Olson seized the opportunity to make sure the story was told. The book, aside from its dramatic re-telling of the events leading up the blast, and its aftermath, is very relevant for today. It provides insight and perspective on land use and the economic issues surrounding the blast. If you read the Wikipedia entry on Mount St. Helens, it makes it seem as if government did a lot to protect lives. But this book provides an entirely different accounting and is very critical of the state government's response. It illustrates the tensions between big business and government over access restrictions. He explains -- in a very compelling way -- how the death toll could have been substantially higher had it not been for the timing of the volcano blast. Fundamentally, this is a story about hubris. You can apply to response to the volcano's threat to response the leadership makes today to all kinds of threats. Climate change, in particular, came to mind. The land use history and the Washington politics around it foreshadows the strident arguments being made out West today. The history of Weyerhaeuser at the start of the book runs, perhaps, a bit long but it's easy enough to read quickly through it to get the heart of the story. And the heart of the story is a very, very good read.

As far as disaster stories go, it's hard to get much more awe-inspiring than volcanic eruptions, yet I found myself skimming whole sections of "Eruption" despite the subject matter. Instead of delving deeper into the human tragedy, or the science of volcanic eruptions, nearly a third of the book is given to dry, vaguely interesting histories of the forest service and the Weyerhaeuser logging corporation. Having just finished "A Wall of White" (the account of a contemporaneous avalanche disaster in the Sierras, and an absolute page-turner) I expected such a slim volume about an even more dramatic cataclysm to hold me fast from start to finish. It did not, despite the cinematic heights of hubris, ignorance, and bravery its cast of characters display. A missed opportunity.
