Being a teacher of 40 years now, I enjoyed the entire story. It's always inspiring and motivational to me when a gifted teacher is recognized for the great work they do in the classroom, and, in this case, on the stage. I like how the teacher, Lou Volpe, continue to develop his drama program in a struggling and troubled high school into the premier high school drama program in the country. It was refreshing to read the drama program being the most desired program for students to enter at Truman High School. It was doubly meaningful the author of the book was a former student in the Truman High School drama program and returned to write about the program and the beloved teacher who led it for 44 years. I've never been a teacher at any school for longer than 10 years, so it was eye opening reading experience for me to see how a dedicated teacher spends most of his adult life and entire career at one school. I recommend this book to all those teachers thinking about leaving the profession due to burnout and those people considering education as their chosen profession.

I've had the privilege of seeing several of Mr. Volpe's plays at Truman, and for most years his productions had more meaningful artistic content than many of the productions in professional regional theatre. The story is compelling (I read the book in one - long - sitting) and the message of what Lou achieved with these 'blue collar' kids is relevant anywhere in the world. ALL kids from all backgrounds are capable of greatness as long as those kids have someone who believes in them, and have gifted teachers and motivating parents. Read this book, then find a way to stimulate greatness in education within your own community. Also, can't wait to see the NBC TV series based on this book, in the Fall of 2017.

"Drama High" is an enthralling read. I highly recommend it. Writer Michael Sokolove has placed layer upon layer of brilliant writing into this work. Headline writers have tabbed this book to be about a "real-life 'Glee'" or "'Glee' meets 'Friday Night Lights'." Those are too pithy and don't do justice to the book's impressive scope, depth and emotional resonance.Ostensibly, Sokolove's book is a paean to his former teacher, Lou Volpe, retiring after four decades at his post as drama teacher at Harry S Truman High School in Levittown, PA. While the book focuses on Volpe's career as its touchstone, so many other excellent themes here including: the role of arts programs in American high schools; the effect of budget cuts; theater programs' position in lower- to middle-class communities; the regression of the middle class; the roots, struggles and perseverance of Levittown; Volpe's family history and sexual identity; the stories of Volpe's ex-wife and now-adult only child; the business of high school musical; the kids' stories, motivations, fears and dreams...and so much more.Lou Volpe is an American hero.

Mr. Sokolove has penned a rousing and hearty portrait of Levittown, PA drama teacher Lou Volpe. Most of us, I think, wish we'd been blessed with a teacher like Mr. Volpe, whose work over 40 years stimulated the impressionable minds of teens and magically transported them to a world of imagination and expansion, while invigorating their parents and inspiring a community that's had its fair share of struggles. It leaves no doubt that teachers have an opportunity to make a difference, to change the world (or at least a small, but significant, part of it).I wish there a law was on the books requiring that anyone over 30 who thinks our schools don't need to, or even shouldn't, teach the arts, read this splendid and "Incredible True Story of a Brilliant Teacher, a Struggling Town and the Magic of Theater."Buy and read this book and u will be Inspired with a capital "I."

This is a remarkable and unexpected story of a high school where the drama program is not only successful, it's the MOST successful thing in the school, maybe the town. If you don't believe in the value of theater in high schools, you will after reading this (but let's be honest you probably won't read this). At times the author inserts himself into the narrative too much for my taste, but that calms down after the beginning. He does also get a couple of basic facts about musicals wrong (including the one he sat through hours of rehearsal for) that make me question some of the stuff I can't personally fact check, but I'm nit-picking. The epilogue had me crying on the subway.

As a teacher, I can only hope to inspire students a fraction of the amount Mr. Volpe has. He has truly left a legacy and one can only imagine the far reaching impact of his guidance and inspiration. As a theater fan, I loved reading about the process of staging both the large scale musicals and the smaller, but equally important, plays that Mr. Volpe put together. There are so many gems within each page. I appreciate that along with the craft, students developed true respect for all aspects of theater. It is a testament to Mr. Volpe, his students, and the school district that three large scale, world-famous musicals entrusted their program with piloting the school editions. What an opportunity those students were given! This is a book that any fan of theater, teaching, or inspirational stories should not miss!

This was an interesting look into the importance of art and music education in schools while also showing the impact of a teacher that cared beyond the classroom for his students. Volpe seemed to be a caring and passionate teacher. While also sharing his passion for theater with his students. I just wish the tangents, that I felt had nothing to do with the story, had been left out, otherwise, it was a great read.

This book is a MUST READ for ANYONE who is a current teacher or considering going into education. I'm a theatre arts educator and found Lou Volpe's story extremely inspiring---we need to push the envelope sometimes and the biggest problem with public schools is that everyone is too afraid of controversy. Lets start raising the stakes and treating teens like young adults.

It's amazing how many matches are won or lost on sports psychology, and yet after losing a match because of nerves or some related issue, players go and practice the shots they missed when they were nervous rather than address the reason they missed the shots with a dose of sports psychology."Have you ever stopped to consider how elite table tennis players deal with the pressure of competition and consistently perform at their best?" That's the opening line. It's 158 pages with lots of useful content. It covers sports psychology specifically for table tennis better than anything else I've read, since most other books are more general, for all sports. It does so not just with theory, but with practical steps to improve your mental game and thereby your overall game.I reviewed an earlier and shorter version of this book, "Get Your Game Face On." This version is greatly expanded, both the text and the title. If you are serious about your table tennis, I strongly encourage you to read this book, and try out the various methods explained for strengthening your mental game. It could pay off dramatically in your performance.In Part 1, the book covers the Game Face System, going over both the routine and how to train for it. It points out four major problems that plague table tennis players, and then goes about giving systematic ways of combating them:-Inconsistency-Not being able to play as well as we practice-Your energy level can be too high or too low-DistractionsCentral to the book is developing a "Game Face," the inseparable relationship between emotional, mental, and physical (the "Game Face Performance Triangle"), and a "Game Face Routine," using the four R's, which are covered in Part 2:-Reaction ("If you want to maintain your Game Face during competition, you must learn to control your reaction consistently right after every point.")-Recover (Recover from the point, relax, etc., with eight methods listed)-Readiness (This is where you ensure that you are mentally prepared for the action to resume. You ask yourself, "What is the situation? What is my job?" This is where you do your tactical thinking.)-Ritual (To prepare mentally for the next point)Throughout the book there are numerous real-world examples from world-class players. Often I was nodding my head at mental tricks that match what I'd developed over the years, or at recognizing something I'd see others do. The book should be a must for table tennis coaches and serious players.The book then goes on to cover four major problems players face in competition, with a section devoted to each, and how to recover from them: Anger, Nerves, Mistakes, and Distractions. While the Four R's are likely the most important part of the book long-term, these four sections are probably of great value short term for players trying to address these issues right now. (But the Four R's will give a longer-term fix, especially in combination with this section.)Part 3 covers a wide variety of issues under the general topic of Develop Your Healthy Lifestyle Choices. After more about the Game Face Performance Triangle (Emotional-Physical-Mental), it covers 14 specific topics under three categories. Under Physiological, it has Nutrition, Hydration, and Sleep. This book knocked me out. I could not put it down, and brought it on a 10 day backpack trip in the Sierras, reading every evening. After fairly extensive reading on Reconstruction while writing an academic paper, I discovered a youtube lecture by David Blight on the subject. He was so intelligent, expressive, fair-minded, and able to synthesize and explain diverse materials that I immediately googled him and discovered this book. Race and Reunion treats what happened after Reconstruction - in a nutshell (forgive me Professor!) in order to reunify the north and south, blacks were forgotten/ignored, allowing the country to be stitched back together, in a fashion. Had the North required the South to honor the Emancipation Proclamation and the 14th Amendment, unification would have been very difficult or impossible. But the North was exhausted by the war and distracted by other pressing matters, Lincoln was gone and had no comparable substitute, and the South was determined to continue to treat blacks as secondary citizens. In a delicate dance, separate memorial days gradually became joint memorial days, as white veterans from both sides began sharing tales of courage, honor, and battle together, and mutual forgiveness evolved. This required the north to look the other way as the South enacted and enforced Jim Crow laws. The book is meticulously researched, and approaches the problems from multiple different points of view, using a wide variety of evidence (such as popular literature of the time). It is clear and readable. This book made me wish that I had become a historian.

Compellingly written and impressively researched, this book shows how the Southern story about the Civil War and its aftermath took over as the national story in the half-century after the Emancipation Proclamation. That story stayed in place until the civil rights movement in the second half of the 20th century, which is a long run for a narrative far removed from what is suggested by the actual evidence about the causes of the war and about racial developments after the war.Blight shows how, after the war, various groups competed to have their story about the war take over as the dominant narrative. African Americans focussed on what it meant for them -- the end of slavery -- and expected freedom and citizenship to lead to full participation in society. Many Southerners, however, almost immediately began to push for as much of a return to the old social order was was possible. In this effort, the construction of "The Lost Cause" myth gave a post-war focus to regional patriotism (the war was only lost because of the crushing numerical and material superiority of the North). At the same time, focussing on states' rights as a cause of the war rather than on slavery gave southerners an acceptable reason to have fought. As to the Northern story, Blight suggests that there wasn't much of one. During the war, saving the union and freeing the slaves were both major motivations for Northerners, but as the war slipped into the past, Northern interest in maintaining the rights of black people faded. In time, race relations in the South became the province of state and local governments, with the North implicitly accepting the abandonment of black rights as the price of national reunion.Blight shows how this happened in very concrete detail: the emergence of a literature of the Lost Cause, the appearance of history and veteran's magazines and organizations advancing the southern view, the building of monuments in the South, the choosing of textbooks, the "reconciliationist" push for Blue/Grey reunions, etc. etc. etc. This was a highly organized and very successful effort to take control of the memory of the Civil War, a process which helped Southern states make race a local issue, not a national one. That, of course, had terrible implications for African Americans.More broadly, this book vividly illustrates how much of the "history" we learn in school and from the culture around us is really a version of history, selected and shaped to bolster patriotism and a sense of group identity. That's not just true of the American South, of course -- every society has its national myth, which forms the basis of its official version of history, including America as a whole. But the sucdess of the Southern story in taking over the national view and national politics -- especially national politics about race -- was remarkable. Clearly, history isn't always written by the victors.Note for those interested in the Civil War -- David Blight, the author of "Race and Reunion", has an EXCELLENT series of podcasts on "The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877" which is available free at I Tunes U at the ITunes store. It comprises 27 lectures, each about 50 minutes long, of which about a third are on pre-war developments, a third on the war itself, and a third on reconstruction. If this series were a book, it would be one of the best I have ever read on the Civil War. It isn't a book, but it is a great listen.

The end of the combat of arms in April 1865 began the combat of memory over the meanings of the American Civil War. For Southern whites and freed former slaves the stakes could not have been higher.White planters knew that if the war was recalled as a revolt by wealthy slave owners against the first modern democracy to preserve black men and women as mere property that they could never again occupy a leading role in the republic they had willingly sacrificed 600,000 lives to destroy.African Americans knew that their transition from chattel to citizenship depended on the support of a Northern electorate whose anger at the haughty manner in which Southerners had plunged the country into the worst war in American history made them a vengeful ally of the freedmen.Writing a hundred years after the war, Robert Penn Warren wrote that Civil War memory still penetrated into the consciousness of America. "The Civil War is our felt history-history lived in the national imagination", he wrote during those early years of the Civil Rights Movement. Penn Warren said that all Americans draw lessons from the war. One lesson is that "slavery looms up mountainously" in the American story, but the other is that "when one is happy in forgetfulness, facts get forgotten," or as William Dean Howells put it more succinctly, "What the American public always wants is a tragedy with a happy ending".African Americans tried to deny a happy ending to the Civil War, or any ending to it at all, before full equality was achieved.Historian David Blight's important book on the creation of Civil War memory, Race and Reunion, tells the story of how in American culture "romance triumphed over reality, sentimental remembrance won over ideological memory...as a culture, we have preferred [the Civil War's] music and pathos to its enduring challenges." He says that the war "haunts us...but often we do not face it."Immediately after the war ended, memory favored freed slaves.Once despised abolitionists were cast as unarmed heroes who had recognized the danger of the Slave Power of the Old South. These abolitionists advanced the theory that the war represented America's march towards equality and full democracy.Less ideologically determined Northern soldiers' memories saw the blacks as allies of the Union army and as the rescuers of lost soldiers and escapees from the South's notorious prisoner of war camps.Both memory sources saw the Southern elites as treasonous, anti-democratic, and barbarously violent.African American leaders like Frederick Douglas worked untiringly to keep these memories alive. They hailed Abraham Lincoln as the bringer of a new birth of freedom to America, insisted that the abolition of slavery and the enfranchisement of non-whites was central to its meaning, and reminded Northern veterans and their families that nearly 200,000 Southern blacks had volunteered to fight beside them in the Union army to preserve the United States as a haven of freedom.But, Blight says, "in the half century after the war, as the sections reconciled, by and large, the races divided." This was reflected in popular novels of the time. By the 1890s romantic fiction often involved secret love affairs between the daughter of a Confederate veteran and the son of a Union soldier. The parents at first try to stand in the way of a match that would unite two families that three decades earlier were involved in deadly warfare. When the lovers marry, they bring about a reconciliation of the families, symbolic of the reconciliation of the North and South. There, were, Blight writes, no similar romances of racial reconciliation in which the daughter of a planter marries the son of a freedman as a harbinger of reconciliation between former slave owner and slave.To emerge as a world power, the United States had to craft a nationalism that had never existed during its first century of independence. A country in which the powerful in the North and the powerful in the South were permanently at odds could never challenge Britain, France, or Germany on the world stage.Blight writes that "The memory of slavery, emancipation, and the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments never fit well into a narrative in which the Old and New South were romanticized and welcomed back to a new nationalism". Instead of examining the war's deeper meanings, Northerners gradually accepted the Southern white claim that the war was never about slavery and that the real focus of history should be on the heroism of the young white Americans involved in the war, their loyalty to what they believed to be right, and their devotion to duty.Southern white interest in maintaining this fiction was so great that state school boards across the South barred the use of textbooks that included a realistic treatment of race in their discussions of the war. National textbook publishers accordingly de-historicized their books to protect the tender sensibilities of the grandchildren of the Confederates.The extremes to which the Southern white effort to control history were willing to go can be seen in the 1911 response to an essay on the war by an academic historian. Enoch M. Banks taught at the University of Florida. He published an article on the war's Fiftieth Anniversary in which he said that after full study of the issue he had concluded that the "fundamental cause of secession and the Civil War...was the institution of slavery". This essay stirred a firestorm of denunciation across the South where newspapers denounced his "false and dangerous" views. State funding for the university was threatened and Banks resigned his professorship.As the North accepted the Southern white interpretation of the war, it also embraced its notions of racial segregation, and, Blight says, a "segregated society demanded a segregated historical memory." The new history of the war that emerged in the early 20th Century, essentially wrote blacks out of its narrative. When African Americans tried to assert their freedom as central to the war by holding Emancipation Day celebrations and commemorations of Lincoln's birthday every year, they came to be viewed as distorters of the true meaning of the war. Blight says that for blacks "Lincoln was their icon" and the Emancipation Proclamation their Magna Carta, but whites now took a jaundiced view of "Old Abe" and often seemed to forget the Proclamation entirely.In 1875 Fredrick Douglas had asked if war among the whites had brought emancipation for Blacks, what would peace bring? During the half century after he uttered that question, peace meant the increasing degradation of blacks and the whitewashing of memory.

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. Dear Park gets 3 stars because Book 5 of Osamu Tezudka Buddha series is not one of the better books. On a scale of 1 to Tezuka. It is a good book but this writer can do better. Having become Buddha, the Enlighten on, he is relegated to preaching to deer. However much they benefit from his teaching they are still hunted for food and sport. This theme is repeated for very dramatic effect but the lesson are never made explicit.Every book has its anachronisms, and sometimes they are there to save time or to make a point. For example this one has a prince-ling reading comic books. This is forgivable because it allows the writer to say things about the universality of parent child growing pains and poke fun at the present. The sudden appearance of a American Indian was jarring and to no purpose. Instead of helping to move the plot forward or explain or make fun it just brought the plot to a full stop.After the truly clever techniques that established Buddhism as distinct from mere aestheticism, and even more destroying the concept of spiritual achievement by self-imposed physical pain, very little is said in book 5 and less is new from earlier books.Every book has had the problem of pointless violence. The violence of the weak against the strong has been a question from book 1. It is central in book 5 but it just hangs there. Again we get the nobility of self-sacrifice for the benefit of the others but again no conclusions are drawnThe art work remains superb.I will finish these books. I cannot speak for their how closely they adhere to the story of Buddha or the core of his teaching. I trust Tezuka to lead me to think more deeply and not just about Buddha’s growth.

Great book, but the kindle edition does not work. Literally all that opens is the title page, book cover, and table of contents. It's a real shame, because I was looking forward to re-reading. Not only does it NOT WORK, returning/refunding it is a huge pain. Don't buy for Kindle, definitely buy on paper.

Tezukas work is amazing and the telling of this story is like no other.

I picked up one of these books at our local library and fell in love with the story. After purchasing the complete set, I am glad I went into the library that day.

Tatta now finds himself charmed into becoming a guardsman for a king by Devadatta. He is very good at his job, and quickly moves up the ranks, and begins to see ways to seek his revenge on Kosalan. Meanwhile, having achieved enlightenment Siddhartha finds demons still tempt him, other monks test him, and finds disciples in deer.This is one of the better books in the series. All of the stories work well together, and deliver a strong message of about the Buddha's teachings.In the last chapter, war is starting to break out. Three of the main characters (Buddha, Tatta, and the Crystal Prince) encounter each other in the forest, setting up, and foreshadows, the next part of the story.

About the Author

Matt Neuburg started programming computers in 1968, when he was 14 years old, as a member of a literally underground high school club, which met once a week to do timesharing on a bank of PDP-10s by way of primitive teletype machines. He also occasionally used Princeton University's IBM-360/67, but gave it up in frustration when one day he dropped his punch cards. He majored in Greek at Swarthmore College, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1981, writing his doctoral dissertation (about Aeschylus) on a mainframe. He proceeded to teach Classical languages, literature, and culture at many well-known institutions of higher learning, most of which now disavow knowledge of his existence, and to publish numerous scholarly articles unlikely to interest anyone. Meanwhile he obtained an Apple IIc and became hopelessly hooked on computers again, migrating to a Macintosh in 1990. He wrote some educational and utility freeware, became an early regular contributor to the online journal TidBITS, and in 1995 left academe to edit MacTech Magazine. He is also the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide. In August 1996 he became a freelancer, which means he has been looking for work ever since. He is the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, both for O'Reilly & Associates.

I'm a newbie to swift language. Though I've used C++, Python and Ruby for development, Swift is very different in many aspects. So I was expecting a book to provide good grasp of finer details of the language. This book, when first glanced at a book store, appeared to explain lots of finer details with sample codes but after purchased, I'm sending more time reading the book, I feel the code samples are not so useful as they seem to come from other projects with very little explanation to go with. Now I'm spending more time on the internet trying to understand the concept the book is throwing at me. The sample code snippets in the book are USELESS. I've finished first 3 chapters and find it harder to use this book. I'm not happy with this purchase.

An excellent tutorial. While not for the faint of heart it details the thought processes behind the Swift language implementation and goes to gerate length to explain how the various functions are implemented.

I agree with a number of other reviewers. This book has deep knowledge and insight into Swift and how it coexists with Cocoa and Objective C. If you are really serious about using Swift in an IOS app and want to use it well, this book is essential.When I was learning C, I started with Kernigan and Richie which gave me the syntax and a brief introduction. But someone recommended to me that I also needed to read the C Companion by Holub for the rest of the story. This book on Swift is like the C Companion--what you need to know to really use the language well.Strongly recommended.

Excellent guide to iOS 8 in general and Swift in particular. It's packed with many well known but also many obscure details of Swift and of Xcode - many features and the occasional pitfalls to avoid. This is the latest edition on iOS in a series going back to iOS 4 but it's absolutely up to date. Highly recommend!

As a Disney Pin Trader for many years I stumbled across the Tomart Pin Trading Guide 6th Edition Volume I when I was at Walt Disney World 2 years ago and fell in love with it! So when I saw Volume II came out for the 6th Edition, I couldn't wait to get it. This book is a must have for all Disney Pin Traders as it shows all the pins for both Walt Disney World & Disneyland as well as Disney Cruise Line, Disney Home Video, Disney Movie Clue, Disney on Broadway, etc. Plus this Volume II shows all the Hiddem Mickey/Cast Lanyard sets from the recent years which is a bonus. The pages show full color photos and lists each pin within a category. Its easy to use with the directory in the front of the book. I can't say enough great things about this book. Looking forward to getting Volume 7 when it comes out.

Disney pins have been a hobby of mine for quite some time now. To be able to look them up quickly in a wonderfully categorized and well designed colorful book is so much fun! You also get a rough value on the pin itself which is great, and you can look up ones you might want to keep an eye out for while trading or maybe figure out which cast lanyard pin you are missing from your set. Very enjoyable book that can be shared and looked through for hours on end!

We are big Disney fans and even though we live in Northern Illinois, we have annual park hopper passes for Walt Disney World. The wife and I are retired and also belong to the Disney Vacation Club so we always have a place to stay down there and frequently take friends and family down for vacations.One of our biggest vices is pin trading. We have albums of Disney pins in the house and we always stock up on traders before we go down. We wear our lanyards and trade with other Disney goers or Disney staff members. We have had Volume 1 for some time and it has been a great help in giving us an idea on whether ones we are trading are worth keeping or trading again. We do it for fun, not profit, but when we run into a valuable pin, we like to keep it in our album.So volume 2 continues with new pins that is not in the old book. It was a valuable addition to our library. We use both books now to help identify the values of pins that we trade. I wish the books were less expensive, but really this is the only real pin book out there that is comprehensive enough to be worthwhile owning.

I got this for a Christmas gift. My cousin loves pin trading at Disney and freaked when I gave it to him. He said it was the perfect item to add to his collection.

I'd say that this is a great book if you are a collector and have the time to sit down and go through it. I didn't give it 5 stars only because it is very difficult to read. The print is very small. I bought it for my mother and she's 78 and has to use a magnifying glass to read the pages. I would have rather had the print bigger and more pages so she could read it easier. Other than that, she loves the book and has no problem finding the information she is looking for.

I was looking for a book which listed the Disney pins by the year. I had a hard time finding nd matching the pins I have. However, there is much in the guide to learn.

My only wish for these books is that they were updated more often, but the ease of use and reference guide for a casual collector (and a beginner like me) are great. I collect only casually, the stuff that catches my eye, but I love being able to see all the possibilities and different pins, for this reason alone I enjoyed this book.
