A. Thomas Horvath, PhD, FAClinP, was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio. He graduated from St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, and the California School of Professional Psychology at San Diego. He is a board certified clinical psychologist (American Board of Professional Psychology) in private practice. In 1985 he founded Practical Recovery Services, which offers an alternative to 12-step and disease-oriented addiction treatment. He is a past president of the San Diego Psychological Association and the San Diego Phobia Foundation. Since 1995 he has been president of SMART Recovery, a non-profit network of support groups for individuals abstaining from any type of addictive behavior. From 1999-2000 he served as president of the American Psychological Association's Division on Addictions (Division 50). The division has over 1200 members and is the world's largest organization of addictive behavior psychologists.

There are many ways to treat addiction just like there are many religions that promise salvation. The problem is when people start saying that their way is the only way. But that's not the case with "Sex, Drugs, Gambling, & Chocolate: A Workbook for Overcoming Addictions" by Dr. A Thomas Horvath. Horvath offers an approach similar to "SMART (Self Management And Recovery Training) Recovery and Moderation Management". Horvath's workbook is based on 2 premises: that addiction is an extreme version of habit and that overcoming addiction occurs using the same processes we use to change other habits. These ordinary processes include: increasing self-awareness, identifying and resolving conflict, discovering and developing alternative behaviors, using support from others, not acting on temptation, and being persistent. Horvath doesn't agree that addiction is a disease and he believes moderation is possible and worth considering. He also, quite correctly, I believe, asserts that most people in AA benefit more from the social support rather than from total acceptance of the 12-step philosophy, and some people will benefit only from AA and NA, while some won't benefit from any approach. When working this book, I gained the most insight from the cost/benefit analysis. Early in my addiction, there were many benefits. Drugs helped me cope with anxiety, depression, and boredom. They improved my social ability (or so I thought), gave me a sense of belonging, helped me feel self-confident, prevented pain, gave me energy, made me more creative and most importantly, produced euphoria. But over time, one by one, without my realizing it, these benefits were slowly replaced with their polar opposites and a tally of negative consequences too long to list here. There are also three informative chapters on dealing with cravings, and Horvath suggests many support groups that are alternatives to AA and NA, but good luck finding them unless you live in California. With so many books written on addiction, I feel fortunate I read this one. I picked it because it is offered, among other things, as an alternative to the classic 12 step, which I find unappealing. I know some people personally who have overcome severe addictions with the 12 step program DESPITE not believing in it or in a higher power, These people obviously believe in themselves, and would have overcome their addiction with just about any type of help,for these individuals it is equivalent as saying that if you are determined to lose weight ANY diet will work.If you don't feel quite as strong as that, this book is a competently written work that you may find helpful and even very motivating, and empowering. This handbook is very informative, and information is power. On some level I was already aware of the principles and theories presented, but the author put them into focus for me and affirmed what I already knew about bad habits, associations, cravings, etc.I definitely recommend this book.

I am a pyscholgoist who works with clients who have addictions, particularly having to do wih money issues. I often find a need for an alterantive to 12-step work, and this books meets that need.Dr. Horvath's books is a good guide. I don't follow it to the letter, but often find myself using the exercises he recommends for clients, more or less in the order he prescribes.The book feels like it is written a little too simply in places. This book was recommended to me by a psychologist as an alternative to method for dealing with addiction. As the title suggests, the book is generalized to cover most any addiction. Most people struggling with addiction only know of the 12-step (AA type_ program. The AA program is an "all or nothing" solution that treats the addiction as a "disease" and puts the solution in the hands of a "higher power". I am not knocking AA, or the program, it has saved many lives. However, total abstinence does not work in all cases, obviously someone addicted to food can't stop eating all together. This book does not treat addiction as a disease or imply that we are powerless to overcome it.This workbook offers a different approach. The book suggests accepting the benefits that are associated with the addiction and weighing them against the associated costs (material, emotional, etc...) The book helps find alternative methods for achieving the benefits, without the negative impact. The result is a solution that may not require total abstinence from the substance or activity. The book does recognize (and recommends) that in some cases, abstinence is the best method for approaching some addictions. The book points out that you are capable of making good decisions.If you're struggling with one or more addictions I recommend using this book. If you're reading this, chances are you or someone you care about is struggling. There is hope. Whether you use this method or the traditional 12-step approach, there is hope. Don't give up. Don't get discouraged. If you're reading this, you're already headed in the right direction. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Horvath is an excellent professor, his class is one of the best I've had in grad school and the workbook is great to use with clinical populations.

Having only a passing familiarity with the history of the European colonization of sub-Saharan Africa, I must admit to being somewhat shocked at the raw body count associated with Leopold's rape of the Congo. As many have asked, "How could the death of up to 10 million people become nothing more than a footnote to this historical era?"The subjugation and plundering of large areas of the region was certainly not an activity that began and ended with Leopold, however, the scope of his atrocities coupled with the other aspects of his pathetic life identify him as an utterly miserable excuse for a human being.That being said, however, it should be noted (as the author does at the end of his work), that in many ways, Leopold was a man of his times. If his body count was higher than that of French, German and English colonies, this was largely due to the fact that the rubber resource was more densely located in his area of control. What matter the body count if the value of the bodies were negligible? Even many of the "heroes" identified in the book, looked with disgust and abhorence at the subjects of Leopold's crimes against humanity.However, it is these very individuals, who took on at great risk the powers involved in the carnage that make up the story of this period. A willingness to protect the defenseless, at great personal sacrifice and with virtually no hope of either success or reward is what identifies the finest among us.

Well this is an impressive book, I'm sure there are numerous really good reviews so I'll add something that might be a new observation, reading about British (and Irish) Counsel Roger Casement it reminded me that I read about him before and I looked up and found the story in Charles Mann book 1493 uncovering the new world Columbus created. It's always a thrill to find like a intellectual Easter egg especially if it's unexpected. One of the strengths of this book was how it introduced us to so many persons that are little noticed by history but had large impacts on the world, they came together to fight against one of the great crimes of the day King Leopold's rape and murderous rule of the Congo, they were rather successful over time although the guilty as is almost always the case in these types of crimes went largely unpunished accept for how they are view in history. Reverend William Sheppard sounds like an amazing man, so too with E. D. Morel, if it wasn't for this book I would know nothing of their stories. The difficulty of conducting this research when the main principals did everything they could to destroy the cover over there deeds, the remoteness of the area and the time period, makes it a miracle that this book could be written at all. Very glad I read it I've created a new shelf called Excellent History books just for books like this although their can't be many such books that reach this depth and understanding, it will always stand out in that shelf as a must read history book.

So I don't usually do leave reviews of books but I had to this time. I bought this books about 8 Pontus ago but I read the last few weeks only and I think it was the perfect timing with what is going on in my life right now as I'm making big choices concerning my future right now. If I didn't read this book right I probably would have missed on what might just be my life goal and something I plan on focusing for a good part of my life once I get more ready for it. I know this is not much of a book review as of now but I just wanted to show how much the story of my people have affected me and how I really want to do something about all the suffering that have been going and keeps on happening now. I myself grew up in Kinshasa, my dad was an army colonel who fought against Mobutu in the 90's and had to flee the country for a few years because of that. This year (2017) I'm about tombe 18 and I surprised that it's only now that I get to know the story of my people and what that so-called King Léopold II have done. Throughout my read I came to decide that one day I want to be a change in my countries history too, a positive change, I want to be the African voice to change the Congo and make it one of the great countries. I know I sound a little too exited now and kind of dreaming but I'm still a kid so I guess it's okay right? One day hopefully once I do start making a change someone finds this "review" and call me out on it.

I really wanted to love this book, but as some of the other reviewers have said, it is rather unoriginal, cliched and oddly content-free. I'm not exactly sure who this book is aimed at, other than anyone really interested in Aerin Lauder, and willing to pay rather a lot for any information about her life. I was hoping for a lot more about design. As another reviewer said, there are so many close ups - the kind that we are all used to now from instagram and blogs - of flowers, of a tablescape, of dishes, etc., that it is very hard to get an idea of how the rooms actually look. Some of the text about how she made her design choices is interesting, but I would like a lot more.

I checked this book out of the library and soon realized I needed to purchase one for myself. The rooms pictured in the book give you great ideas on how to put the old with the new with real style. This is a keeper!

Not sure what this book is truly about. It has little photographs. I expected this book for the price requested to be much, much more. Guess I just like the blue color.

Very nice reading, with extremely beautiful pictures. Aerin Lauder has an extremely good taste regarding furniture and interior decoration, and she is also a very good storyteller, sharing some valuable thoughts regarding home, family and life. Lastly, the book is very well built, being a beautiful piece of decoration itself! Satisfaction guaranteed!

A beautiful book from the super-stylish and chic Aerin Lauder. Sadly it arrived a bit flattened due to Amazon's packaging (the spine is now quite loose) but that's life.

Nice coffee table book. Love Aerin designs and especially the luxury feel of her gilded products.

I saw the segment on Channel 6 about this book and had to get it. My experience with self- and co-published books, is that they're marginal in quality, editing, and content. Not the case here. Ms. Posh did a great job of capturing all there is to do in Milwaukee and did it with a great writing style, and no editing blunders. Many of the things listed, I've done, but I've found many new places and things to check out. Many interesting facts are presented too, such as: the Milwaukee Wave is the oldest continually operating professional soccer franchise in North America! Who knew?? She provides suggested itineraries for various scenarios too. All-in-all, a great book, whether you've lived here all your life, or are just passing through for a few days.

It has a lot of predictable interesting things to do in it, but falls short. There are so many places missing. I liked the "Milwaukee Bucket List" book better.

Though objections of Schacht's theses have existed they were either amateurish or piecemeal offering no alternative methodology. Motzki here builds a new methodology employing an early text unavailable to Schacht, 'Abd al-Razzaq's Musannaf, and is thus able to change the tide of scholarship with a much more amiable and optimistic view of how much we can know about Islamic history from the 2nd half of the 1st century A.H. onwards.

Though ostensibly about early Islamic Law, this work presents the clearest outline of the development of skepticism towards the hadith among Western scholars and the inaccuracy of their hypothesis. Employing texts that were previously unavailable, Motzki demonstrates that many sayings of the Prophet Muhammad were in circulation by the end of the first century. This undercuts the theoretical basis for many skeptical approaches toward the development of the hadith and jurisprudence that have dominated academia over the last fifty years. It is a must read for every scholar of early Islam and anyone who wishes to understand the arguments regarding the authenticity of the hadith tradition.

Motzki presents one of the best rebuttals to the Schachtian theory, which is that the majority of even the "sahih" hadith must be regarded as forgeries that are back-projected onto their supposed sources. In an extensive analysis of Abd al-Razzaq's Musannaf, Motzki shows how each of its various chains of transmission bears distinctive narrative characteristics, relating, for example, to the extent to which the transmitters restrict themselves to verbatim narrations vs inserting their own reasoning, or the extent to which the transmitters relied upon certain sources vs others. We are given a picture of a great many transmitters, across a spectrum of transmissional chains, each with a unique yet internally consistent narrational profile. In the end, as Motzki argues, it is highly improbable that such a constellation of persons, relationships and profiles could have been artificially created.
