I usually have very little interest in pirates, but I enjoyed the stories in this book. The author does a great job of making the stories about people with real emotions instead of just dry facts.
Too jokey and disjointed for my taste. Hard to get a sense of the chronology of history. Might be good as a basis of telling stories to tourists but not a serious history.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Being writer who's detective series is centered around St. Augustine I found this book loaded with facts I never knew. As well as being informative, I thoroughly enjoyed the humorous style of writing. As the title states you'll read about stories that you won't find in other books. If your goen' beachen' this would be a good read.Tom Cook
It took a few pages to swing into the writer's casual writing style, but then it clicked and I find this is a very fun book. Author Sappington invites the read to share the stories with others, or perhaps children in a reading circle, so he writes as one tells stories. His chosen topics are very interesting.An excellent choice to pick up a bit of St. Augustine history and make your travels more fulfilling.Buy it and enjoy!
This book is a real pleasure, recommended for anyone interested in the history of northeast Florida. In fact, even if you're not especially interested in the history of Florida you'll enjoy reading this book. It's like sitting on a porch and listening to a wry oldtimer, sitting in a rocking chair and smoking a pipe, telling you one entertaining tall tale after another.
Gave this as a gift to a local resident who loves St Augustine history and he really enjoyed it!
