I hate to criticize a fellow editor, but those of you who are just starting out in or considering editing as a career should save yourself the $3. I wish I had.I've had a successful career as a freelance editor for four years now, and I thought it would be interesting to read a colleague's comments on the process and maybe pick up a few new tips. Unfortunately, almost all of the content in this book is either flatly wrong ("You must join Google+!") or is recycled fluff from motivational speakers. 'How to Make Friends and Influence People' features strongly. The author admits he has only worked as a freelance editor for a few months, but spends much of the book crowing about what an outstanding editor and pro ebook producer he is - ironic since the book is full of grammatical and layout errors.From a strictly practical perspective, I appreciated the lists of books that the author found useful when teaching himself to proofread. I hadn't read a few of them and will pick them up and take a look. My proofing always needs improvement. On the con side, there is very little information included in the book for fiction editors ("You should maybe go to a writer's conference.") and absolutely none for content editors. The information in this book, such as it is, is strictly applicable only to copyeditors and mainly those in the business world.I'll share with you two quotes from the book that I found gave me perspective on the author's intent, before I gave up on the read about Chapter 9:"Your editing can be average, but if you have great networking and personal skills, people... will do business with you" (p 880 on my Kindle) and "My main purpose with this book... is marketing" (p 883.)I love what I do, and there's plenty of demand for freelance editors right now. If you are considering editing as a career or struggling to get started, don't spend your money helping someone else build their 'brand' by buying something useless. Join a professional organization or two and ask people who have experience to guide you. If you really want, look me up and send me an email, I'd be glad to tell you what I know... for free.

I've had this book for a few months before finally sitting down to read it. Read it in a day and he lists useful tips that you can use right away. Very clearly written without the mumbo jumbo, slang, or technical terms (industry specific). Format was (literally) a step by step guide on what to do, learning editing rules, resources to check out, and he provides samples. I've been contemplating starting my own business but was hesitant where, how, what and when to do it. I'm more excited now than ever because I have a template for getting started. Can't wait to get the ball rolling! Thanks Dan!

This is more like an extended conversation than a full book. It comes in about 54 pages. You should buy the kindle version which is a lot cheaper than the paperback. But even though it is short there is enough here for many readers.

Good, short intro to the field with practical advice. I knocked it down a star because it is soooo short, and since the overview it gives lacks the depth that comes with a longer book, it is not really worth more than 99-cents.

I am more than a bit disturbed by the fact that I'm on page 6 of a book about becoming an editor and have already found 2 grammatical errors. Makes me think this person needed a better editor.

This book was a quick read that was like a personal conversation with the author on how to get started, what to consider, and what was necessary to build a thriving freelance editing business. It's a must read for anyone who is considering launching a business in the editing and proofreading industry.

Great introductory anecdotes. Actually relevant and engaging, unlike most other intros. The writing style is solid. The summary and comparison to non-ruby design pattersn by the Gang of Four are very useful. Sometimes I think the writing could be a bit better, as it can sometimes be hard to digest. I think more comparison and differentiation between patterns would be useful as a separate section, as some design pattersn are very similar, and often times hard to distinguish by isolated, separate explanations alone without explicit comparing.I'd recommend this book to people who have programmed some object oriented application, not brand new beginners to coding. Also, I recommend first reading Sandi Metz's object oriented programming in ruby first, as it familiarizes you with the design problems and solutions... which totally sets you up with the context and understanding that makes this amazing book on design patterns totally sink in better. This book is like gear 3, whereas Sandi's book may be considered gear 2 (gear 1 is just being familiar with ruby language or programming in general). It's much more effective to first reach your previous gear before going into higher gears.

After reading Russ Olsen's Eloquent Ruby years ago, I knew this was a guy who could write. I have recommended that book to numerous people since then, and recently when I was searching for it I found this book. It does not disappoint. If you have read the "gang of four" Design Patterns book you'll recognize most of what Olsen writes about here. But what is amazing and cool is that the book is for rubyists and he demonstrates patterns that are regularly relevant to those of us writing ruby professionally (that includes Rails). And of course there are opportunities to use the beauty of ruby to do in a few lines what I did in many in C++ and Java, so it continues in the vein of instruction I loved so much in Eloquent Ruby. There are even some ruby-specific patterns at the end. I have been writing ruby since 2008 or thereabouts and have written a lot of bad code, and read far more bad code. Read and understand Olsen's books and do the world a favor by seeing ways to follow clean, elegant, simple and regular patterns that make your ruby beautiful.

If you have been programming for any extended period of time, I am sure you have started to see different patterns emerging out of your tasks. You may find you are doing the same thing over and over again, solving problems that you had previously solved in another project. These patterns can vary from smaller chunks of re-usable code, to manage the sending and receiving of email, all the way to watching over a part of your application and triggering notifications to another part of your application. This book, Design Patterns in Ruby takes several of the principles found in the widely known book, Design Patterns by The Gang of Four, and applies them to Ruby. It's a mixture of the theory behind the design patterns, and then hands-on practice applying it to your Ruby applications. While this book is centered around patterns in Ruby, it is not about teaching you Ruby. There is a brief primer in the beginning, but it comes with the understanding that you already know a little bit about the Ruby language. Now it's time to check out some of the patterns presented in this book.WHAT ARE PATTERNS?The book starts off with a chapter devoted to giving background to design patterns and how they can help you build better applications. This chapter isn't a history lesson. The main points of this chapter teach you about awareness. They teach you how to look at your applications, and when and where patterns could best be applied. He gives what he calls Patterns for Patterns while developing:Separate out the things that change from the things that stay the same.Program to an interface, not an implementation.Prefer composition over inheritance.Delegate, delegate, delegate.You ain't gonna need it.These principles provide us the glasses with which to look through as we assess our code. You will want to keep these in the back of your mind as you read through the rest of the book.WHAT IS RUBY?As I stated in the beginning, this book isn't about teaching you Ruby. However, the author does take the second chapter to walk you through the basics. This chapter simply shows you a bit of the syntax, types, and constructs. This intro is very brief, but probably enough to provide a reference throughout the rest of the book if you haven't worked with Ruby before. With this primer into Ruby, the author wraps up the first part of the book and we are now ready to move on to the 14 patterns covered in this book.THE PATTERNSSpotting patterns might not always be easy, even with the guidelines given in the first chapter. One of the strengths of this book is that each chapter poses a different problem and then tackles is using the suggested pattern. This allows you to see it in action, and allows you to get the wheels spinning on how the pattern is used and where else it could be used. After walking through each of the patterns, we are presented with a nice wrap-up of the pattern.This book is not very long in length, so I won't go into great detail with each of the patterns, as they are covered very well in each chapter. You need the context to understand how all of the pieces fit together. Design Patterns in Ruby is humorous at times and well thought out, covering 14 of the Gang of Four (GoF) design patterns. No one knows Missional Communities quite like Mike Breen and 3DM. This is not another book by those looking on to something happening in Church and trying to explain what they see. Mike helped pioneer Missional Communities to make his church in England one of the largest in Europe. He has been leading and training leaders for MC's for years, and this book is an overview of that training. This is hands-on training from someone who is a practitioner first, and a trainer second.This book lays out what Missional Communities are, the culture that forms them, practical examples of how they function, and lots of practical tips on how to lead them well. If you're looking for an introduction to Missional Communities, I would look elsewhere. But If you already have a vision for Missional Communities and are looking for the next step in how to actually lead them, this book is for you.

It has some good insights and seems very practical but I don't know if this idea is for everyone. To really see this work well, you have to totally commit to the plan. I don't know that every church is ready to do so.

Great book to read when considering house church style movements. Very insightful, practical, and concisely written. Content to me was spot on! Some parts I needed to reread a few times to really understand the concept but I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of investigating what home church movements can look like or be like.

This is another solid book on missional communities by Mike Breen. Starting with a basic outline of what a missional community is (a vehicle to get us to "extended family on mission), to the major components of a missional community, Breen begins to build a foundation from which a leader can effectively lead. After he establishes this, he then moves into what the role of a leader is, outlines common missteps of leaders and MCs, and then addresses common questions (the ever present one being "what do we do with kids?").Overall, this is a quick, easy read that is chock full of information and advice that will be invaluable to leaders of MCs.

If you are pastoring an existing church and are looking into starting missional communities, this is a very helpful resource. I consult it regularly and have my MC leaders read it, too. If you aren't familiar with 3dm, I'd recommend starting by reading Leading Kingdom Movements. Also, if at all possible, find a 3dm training event or seminar.

One of the best and most practical books on the subject. Recommended for leaders and interns. Full of great principles and practical ideas for implementation.

When reading this book if you lead an existing church do not shortchange yourself by not reading the appendices. This book is very practical and applicable and the appendices answers question is missing in the book.

I love how Breen and the 3DM team have been able to not just repeat once again the principles and insights from previous books; instead, they have made an important contribution to the most practical aspects of the MCs conversation. I truly recommend this work to anyone who is willing to invest time and effort in exploring the potential that MCs have for unleashing common, ordinary believers into the mission of God around their neighborhoods.

This is book one, of a three book series (or volumes).Although at first, I didn't know which book to get, so just get all three. There's plenty of good info in all three making it worth while and they're not overly priced. (Material is pretty much spread across all three volumes.)One reviewer stated it's "Old Info", but have the HVAC manufacturers done anything newer these days not requiring you to know anything within these books? And, if a HVAC manufacturer does have some newer product with bells & whistles (ie. power venter), they usually package an instruction manual including codes and advisories.The books go into a little more detail then I really needed for installing a boiler in my house. So overall, the books covered most of the details. The only item the books omitted, construction of a utilidor or similar access way (ie. 4 inch ABS with PEX pipes).Your other option, buying some $100-500 textbook(s).Remember, safety first. These books adequately detail draft & safety. When in doubt, call a licensed trusted contractor.I'll likely obtain the Kindle versions since I tend to travel, but am unsure of the quality of the diagrams contained within the Kindle versions. When books have diagrams, it was usually best to obtain the PDF. (Also, if you don't steal, beware of EBooks containing undisclosed DRM which will prevent you from reading the media on other devices!)

The Audel HVAC Fundamentals series: Volumes 1, 2, 3, have been a great source of information for me in maintaining my old HVAC system.My Dad first introduced me to the very useful Audel publications.

Audels has been the "go to" volume for professionals and amateurs, alike, for many years.With this 4th edition, the updates have brought the book to new heights! Truly the "bible"of the genre, virtually ANYONE can learn and understand the ins and outs of the heatingworld at any level they choose. For a "quick fix" to a total replacement, this is the"be all and end all' book to buy!!!

A good book, but somewhat outdated or poorly revised between the various editions. I have no basis for comparison, I'm no expert either, but as a machinist I read books of similar aims, which are more up to date with modern tools and practices. I guess i would recommend it.

This guide will just highlight all the spots which are more popular and crowded. There are so many better places in the USVI worth exploring. Of all the places I have visited there, all of the best ones (beaches, restaurants) were not on this guide. Also, if you like nature and outdoors, make sure to not waste your time on St.Thomas - go straight to St John.

This has more of a "commercial" / "professional" publication feel than joe-blow's cruising experiences. It was a good starting point, but Google research after reading about hot-spots is just as important

We did not have any experience of the US or British Virgin Islands, but we knew we wanted to visit, so we bought this book. After reading it the entire way through we were ready to plan our vacation and it was perfect! We took this with us and used it frequently. Great reference. Definitely recommend.
