Excellent as always, the late Father Thomas Dubay (1921-2010) tackles the question of what Gospel poverty means for the various states of life.I read another review which found the first four chapters kind of boring. But whether it was his EWTN shows, or his books, Father always proceeded in a deliberate manner, defining terms, and it pays off in the end. Father doesn't give a one-size fits all answer to what Gospel poverty means for each state in life (He says some positions may require certain trappings), but in general he says we need necessities but don't need superfluities."A superfluity ... is a thing that is needed neither for itself as an end nor as a means to get to something that is so needed. Food is superfluous when because of quality and/or quantity it is not needed for health. ... Pursuing a superfluity is pursuing a dead end. ... This is the advice given to Titus: we must give up everything that does not lead to God (Tit 2:12)." (P.104)I think the best things about this book are all the anecdotes Father includes about the saints and how they viewed Gospel poverty, and Father's personal thoughts. For instance:"He (St. Robert Bellarmine) had a fixed principle that it was better to be deceived a hundred times (by beggars) than miss one genuine case." (P.71)"What are we to fear? Death? 'Life to me means Christ, and death is gain.' Exile? 'The earth and its fullness belong to the Lord.' The confiscation of our goods? 'We brought nothing into this world and we shall surely take nothing from it.' I have only contempt for the world's threats, I find its blessings laughable. I have no fear of poverty, no desire for wealth." - St. John Chrysostom who was exiled (P.60)And some of Father Dubay's personal thoughts:"Our destiny is literally out of this world. ... Before this destiny all worldly glitter is dull ... nothing, absolutely nothing on the face of the earth compares with the advanced possession of God in deep prayer. ... Our sole end in life is immersion in ... God." (PP. 41, 92)
I initially thought this book was about the Beatitudes. Then I saw "The Simple Life and Spiritual Freedom" - I always think I need to simplify life - so it sounded like a good one. Not to mention, Father Dubay is one of the BEST authors I have come across and who has fed my desire for spiritual direction. This book is not about reorganizing your stuff or having more "quality time" with the family. This is radical Gospel Poverty - to assert that the Gospels tell us that ALL Christians in ALL vocations are called to poverty. But not the dirty, malnourished, slums kind of poverty. No - it's about using only what you need - NEED, not want or think you gotta have - and sharing everything else. This book came at the right time in my life - seriously re-evaluating the amount of STUFF accumulated in life and how none of it matters from the perspective of eternity.Excellent book!
What a concept! This book came along at just the right moment in my life. It is not a popular concept in today's society, but one that I can wholeheartedly embrace. It spells out why and some of the how of living gospel poverty. If you ever wanted to live a deeper faith, then this book will help you get there.
If only a few thousand or even just a few hundred people read this book and actually lived out the very challenging message then the world would be changed. Just as the Early Church evangelized and converted much of the world at the time, the same spread of Catholicism could be seen today if people actually lived the radical lifestyle Jesus taught. This book gives a very challenging way of doing that. It provides steps and helpful questions along the way to determine if the reader is living a life of virtuous poverty. Father Dubay goes in to great detail about what poverty is and is not and does not give an easy way to wiggle out of an obligation that every Christian is called to. Great read. Prayerfully consider this call to live out this beatitude.
Ouch - this book was very challenging and included great clarity on multiple parts of the Gospels. I kept wanting to find loop holes in what Dubay presents but I kept having to be honest with myself that no such loop holes existed. This put me in my place multiple times with me left looking in the mirror thinking...I've got to change some things in my life. Should be required reading for all Christians. Dubay does not play nice in this book...it is not soft. It is unadulterated honesty...and sometimes that hurts, but is well worth it. My wife and I are changing several things in our lives/family after reading this book.
One of the best books ever on gospel poverty. The book is challenging but clear and breaks down the call to embrace gospel poverty in each vocation (lay, religious, priestly). A must read for every serious Catholic wanting to live out the Gospel better and really understand what the call to embracing simplicity and poverty means and how integral it is to our faith.
Don not read this unless you are ready to change. The 3 key concepts are what are the Ends you are committed to, what are the Means to get you there and what are Necessities in your life. Master these through Jesus's teaching and you are on your way to Scriptural poverty.
This is one of the most challenging books I've read. It has radically altered my worldview regarding the material lifestyle I have chosen to live. This book is making me re-think my priorities and how I tangibly love my neighbor as myself. I'd recommend reading it during Adoration to stimulate prayerful dialogue. It's a book about joy, which is not often associated with "poverty".I recommend this for people who want to better understand how to live authentic Gospel poverty. Gospel poverty is the virtue of detachment from the things of the world (which are fleeting) so we can better yearn for God, who is everything that is good, true and beautiful, and our only source of lasting joy. Gospel poverty is NOT "destitution", which is the secular definition of "poverty". It's a great book to read during Lent.
