I tried another Go book, before tossing it aside in favor of this one. Excellent book. It did what the others didn't: it explained "why". Go is a weird language. So if the reasoning behind the decisions is left out, then the language is hard to swallow. But with proper explanation of the reasoning, one can see the wisdom of Go and forgive some of its odd design and syntax decisions.

Not a book for the impatient; but if you're a novice, this is the book to trust to take you through from beginner to competence and well on your way to proficiency. I've been a professional C/UNIX developer since the mid-80's and Java and Python for the past 20 years. Don't get me wrong: Go is not a difficult language to learn; but I thought I could pick it up in a few hours. There are serious ground-shattering differences between Go and everything else. Although it borrows liberally from C, Java, and Python - it really is a different approach because the language authors aren't afraid to address the shortcomings made in those and other languages for the sake of conforming with the ideas long held to be "norms".Case in point: Go builds statically-bound executables. No more runtime dependency woes from mis-matched DLL / .so versions.Another example: a radically different approach to polymorphism and encapsulation leading to an easier and cleaner object model than any other.The more I learn about Go, the more I am convinced that it will eventually overtake C/C++ as the defacto standard for system level development - and may even challenge Java and the dynamic languages for business-critical applications.

Very good book to get me ready to use Golang.But not just that: it also helps get people into better coding habits.Golang is a language based on best practices, and I feel I not only learned a new language this past Summer, but I also learned more about being a good programmer in general.I would definitely consider using this language in bigger projects in the future, and I have already adopted several practices they listed across other languages I use.The only things I am not a fan of with this language are the ways it implements public vs private data members and interfaces. I feel the variable name casing should not determine public or private members, because it is less explicit. I also did try a few things out, after reading, and I came across some nasty bugs that were not the easiest to track, due to the implicit interface implementation -- things would go from implementing part of my interface and not another to getting changed and implementing them in reverse, even with only the parts in question being changed; I would much rather say "implements x, y, z", and the compiler would know EXACTLY what I'm trying to do.

5 stars for the book, 2 stars for the Kindle edition.I own both the print and kindle editions of this book.The book itself is great but I am very disappointed in the Kindle edition.This is the first time that I have attempted to read a text book on a Kindle and I found that navigation within the book was extremely cumbersome. To add insult to injury all of the online code examples are line wrapped because of the Kindle formatting and there are links to out of line versions that are correctly formatted (but in a horrible font). Honestly, is that the best that Kindle can do?I would have been better off with a PDF file of the book.

This is an awesome book for learning the Go language. It covers all the major areas of the language and has a lot of good example code to learn from. At first I was not a fan of how they would go from using full listings to just snippets. But, I started get used to it when I realized that this was helping me to think more about how to actually build a Go package.My only complaint that I have for the book is that there are sections that feel a little glazed over to me. Topics are just briefly touched on and then they move on. However, this not impede the reader in learning the major portions and important features of the language.

Personally, I haven't quite made up my mind about the Go language itself just yet, but this book is undeniably fantastic! Every programming language needs an introductory book like this: clear and concise, thorough coverage of the entire language without being dense or boring, and puts as much effort into teaching good taste & style as learning the language itself. (Obviously, we'd expect nothing less from anything bearing Brian Kernighan's name on the cover)I especially appreciated the way this book was organized: the very first chapter starts with several illustrative examples before even introducing the language itself. Then the next several chapters cover all of the basic & advanced features of the language. The final few chapters cover some of the other concerns of modern professional programmers beyond just the language itself: the build environment, packaging, testing, etc.If you want to learn the Go programming language, or if you already know how to program in Go but want to improve your understanding of the language, then this is the first & only book you'll need.

I purchased this book in a drug store one day because the title was so absolutely absurd. It was on a book rack next to me while I was waiting on a prescription to be filled. I've been studying the bible my whole life and you expect me to believe this book is going to allow me to learn it in a day?That was about three years ago. I'm now reading through this book for the third time. My plan is to read this book every single year for the rest of my life. I've purchased and given away five copies of this book and have recommended it to a dozen others. It is unquestionably the absolute best, most insightful, powerful, connect-the-dots, bible reading aid I've ever come across. Chuck Missler does an amazing job of bringing to light the power of God's word and he does it in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The book is laid out in 24 chapters, which Missler expects you can read through in about an hour per chapter. That's where the name of the book comes from. It's almost impossible to put down and it gives you a far deeper appreciation and understanding of the scripture than you ever could have had by reading through it on your own.I'd give this book six stars if I could. If you're curious about the scriptures, do not hesitate to purchase this one. It's probably the best money you could ever spend. Absolutely incredible.

The book is based on the widely popular video series, which as it name states, consists of 24 1 hour videos that go through the books of the Bible (the videos are available on YouTube). I loved the videos so much that I decided to purchase the book to go with it.One of Chuck's favorite expressions is “The New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed. The Old Testament is in the New Testament revealed.” This book (and the videos) do an incredible job of proving this out. The book summarizes the Bible, highlights the integrity of the OT and NT, reviews the OT prophesies that were fulfilled in the NT, and calculates statistical probability of Jesus fulfilling the prophecies of the Messiah in the Scriptures (there are over 300 prophesies detailing the coming Messiah and all were fulfilled).A description on the Koinonia Institute website describes the series as: Using sound scientific facts, historical analysis, and Biblical narrative, Dr. Missler weaves together a rich tapestry of information, providing an accurate understanding of Scripture’s relation to itself, to us, and to the world at large. This book will lead the reader through the entire Old Testament in a logical systematic manner. This overview of the Old Testament will emphasize the integrity of design as well as an introduction to conservative hermeneutics with an emphasis on inerrancy and using the Bible to interpret itself. Chuck Missler is a great bible scholar, a great teacher, made me look at things a new and different way. I have already read most of the Bible, but Isaiah and Ezekiel have me stumped. That was my reasoning behind this purchase, but as I read every chapter of this book, and by the way, if your studying at all it's going to take you WAY MORE THAN 24 HOURS, but every moment you spend is SOOOOO WORTH IT. you will look at your bible in a new and fresh way. At least I did, and I've been a bible reading Christian for 30 yrs.

This book introduced me to Dr. Chuck Missler!! My sorrow is that I did not find him till the end of his life. Since I bought this book, have bought other books & materials by him. I am also Very Thankful Some of his material is on UTube. He has enriched my life & and others I call family, so very much!! I recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the Bible!! I have never seen or heard a teacher like him in all my life. He could make me understand Physics in the Bible & I have always avoided Science & Math. He was an incredible man & shares his understanding!! Please read this book!!🙏🏻💖

Yes on survival but not necessarily on complexity.3. The author has a tendency to cross-market his products a tad much. It may come across as look at me...4. A bit repetitive.5. Sometimes leaves you with more questions than answers but that may not be a bad thing...6. No formal separate bibliography.In summary, overall I enjoyed this book. Regardless of your overall stance on the feasibility of artificial intelligence no one brings it like Ray Kurzweil. His enthusiasm and dedication is admirable. The first half of Kurzweil's book summarizes what is known about information processing by the human brain. He details how the neocortex recognizes patterns and stores information hierarchically, producing memory, consciousness and identity. He relates this to modern digital computers in terms of process and speed. After a brief look at hidden Markov chains, he arrives at his favorite topic, LOAR, the law of accelerating returns which leads him to sharing his thoughts about singularities.The victory by WATSON on the TV quiz show, 'Jeopardy', appears frequently in this story.Kurzweil's successful experience with natural language processing software gives him considerable credibility and authority in this attempt to predict computer breakthroughs during the coming decades. Ray Kurzweil is one of the foremost AI geniuses of our times and you probably should read one of his books.

A fascinating idea mired in a circuitous narrative. Kinda like having to sort through a hundred boxes of cereal for a single prize that you have to put together yourself. Perfectly fine for people with time on their hands and a fireplace to sit next to on a wintry evening. But I found myself highly impatient as I leafed through page after page looking for his point. I will always buy Ray's books. Make no mistake. He just needs an editor who knows how to sift the chaff. And Ray, if you are reading this, do let the editor do his/her job. Don't get precious about concepts. We're all pretty smart around here. Just make a point and move on.

Very disappointed. The book is about how the mind works, and not AT ALL about "how to create a mind". So if you're into the study of the brain, by all means read this book. But I was expecting something very different given the author's work in AI and given the title of the book, which is misleading.

In this boom Ray puts together how his knowledge of how the brain works helped in developing his technology a lot of us use daily. He deep dives into research done, as well as the why's of how things work. It is interesting to see the predictions he has made and his reason as to why they came true. He is a very smart man and the book for me was a good read. Although at some points I didn't fully understand what was being explained the majority of the book was so interesting it was hard for me to put down.

Wonderful read, very clear. Kurzweil has achieved confidence and articulation since earlier books, which were fantastic but a bit scattered and self-exploring. This was solid thought-provocation right in the kisser, especially his "everything is hierarchical patterns" grand unification theory. This stuff will change ya!Some find his work overly optimistic / simplistic, thinking that reduces his credibility. Nay, the guy has very real acumen - OCR, Dragon Speak, now Google. His is applied science, implementing his hypotheses directly - the proof is in the pudding. Other criticisms are that this book doesn't illuminate AI implementation ("the title makes grand claims"). Well for that you'll need a text book friends, paperback won't cut it. This book is "Start here. History, core theories, inspiration, grand unification". If you're inspired, make "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" your next read.

This was a really mind-blowing book. I'm always so impressed by Ray's ability to talk about such obscure things with such clarity and insight. His ability to time things is somewhat miraculous considering the array of potential outcomes and probabilities. This book was one of his best.

This book is ok. Kurzweil spends a lot of time comparing himself and his work directly to Einstein, which was frustrating to read. But, he is definitely brilliant and the book is definitely a good read.
