This book is put together so nicely. It includes the instructions on how best to use the book, tips on making the perfect mandalas, a concise refresher how-to crochet stitches, the luscious eye-candy section of all the patterns, and then very clear pattern instructions. Then there is a section on borders, followed by a small projects section at the end. I love all the mandalas. Each one is so different from the others. There is even a pattern on the lesser-known technique of tapestry crochet. All patterns are both written and charted. The charts are designed very cleverly. I love this book!!! Be sure to check out the author's blog as well, which is where I first heard of her.
MANDALAS TO CROCHET: 30 GREAT PATTERNS is one of the best books in my extensive library of crochet books. I learned two techniques from this book--how to join rounds with a needle and how to create a magic ring--and have used them a number of times. The explanations and illustrations in this book are very clear and quite helpful, and the beautiful mandala patterns are inspiring. I do wish that more craft books came with a spiral binding.
You go along in life crocheting round things like doilies or hats and think they look okay. You get compliments, people are super impressed and you think you're pretty awesome. Then you read a book like this which shows you that, no, it looks like you did it with your non-dominant hand. The seam is obvious! The increases scream their presence! You realize it's nothing more than a polygon...not really a circle! Ugh!Yeah, I brooded about it for a while. I wondered why no one told me. Where were my friends?! My true friends that tell me when a pair of pants make my butt look big?! Why didn't they tell me?!I'm just so glad I found this book. It has made me really take a good look at my projects, not just race through them, but really concentrate on detail. It took more time at first, it is awkward to get used to, but then it becomes second nature. Soon I was not just some dork who crochets...I became a High Priestess of Yarncraft!
The interesting fact about the book is that most of the patterns are easy to make yet yield gorgeous art works. Easy to follow instructions even for beginners. The pictures are that much of high quality that an advanced crocheters can easily recognize the type of stitches without having to look at the instructions. The used colors are so inspiring!
If you want to learn something new, or you're cro-jo (crocheting mojo) needs a little punch in its buns, I recommend buying this book! It's so extremely easy to read with the written instructions AND pictured diagram AND colorful pictures to compare while you work on your beautiful project! It shows you all sorts of new and creative stitches while you relax and make a beautiful piece of art. Make them whatever size you want and gift them to whomever! You're the creator! So get creating!
OMG! This is so great - and I haven't even started crocheting! Not just great patterns and ideas and projects - but detailed diagrams and specific "fixes" and troubleshooting when you get those weird ripples and cupping on your round projects. The only bad thing I have to say about this book is that I am sadly disappointed that it wasn't around 20 years ago when I crocheted that huge rag rug that never did lay flat... *sigh*
this is a great book and suitable for beginners who have had a little practice, on up to projects that would be easy for more experienced crocheters. The patterns aren't difficult to follow, but some may employ stitches that may be unfamiliar to people who are new to new to crochet they're v. attractive, an the effect can be changed by weight of yarn and size of hook. I bought this book as a gift for someone who admired my similar project.
This book has beautiful pictures and clearly written, as well as charted patterns. I have made three of them so far, and I have been very pleased. I also like the helpful hints at the beginning of the book. I am an experienced crocheter, but still found helpful information. This is one of my new favorites.
