A fascinating, informative, engagingly readable book. It is not an armchair writer's take on Japanese whisky from information one can scrounge on Google. Rather it is filled with stories, interviews, historical perspectives and informative details only obtained by a long familiarity not only with Japan but good connections with the people involved in the making of Japanese whisky. The book is well organized into three main sections:1. The History - from the earliest stages to modern times allowing a reader to understand why the "whys" and "hows" of the present whisky environment in Japan, including the current whisky boom.2. Distilleries, past and present - not just reviews of current offerings or a brief overview but greater details and interviews with the men making the whiskies. as well as new distilleries starting up but not yet with products in the market.3. Drinking - tasting notes of legendary bottles, iconic series, original cocktails (created for the book by some of the best in the business), suggested bars...What I found most unusual about this whisky book was how hard it was to put down. Like other whisky books it is filled with great pictures, interesting tasting notes, distillery descriptions. Where it departs is the depth it achieves in talking about the distilleries without ever becoming pedantic. The book is replete with interesting anecdotes that humanizes the potentially dry facts and histories. The overall tone is successful and captivating and kept me turning page after page.If you are merely curious about Japanese whisky, or a connoisseur, your bookshelf is not complete without this book. Don't just take it from me, take it from Serge Valentin, one of the foremost whisky reviewers and connoisseurs: "This [book] you should buy."

Wow, extremely well researched and thorough. I have been learning about and enjoying Japanese whisky for many years, and considered myself fairly knowledgeable ("I was into JP whisky before it was cool, man..."), but this book was definitely an eye-opener! A huge amount of information, images, and insight that were completely new to me. Definitely something for everyone as well -- detailed perspective for history buffs, plenty of technical distillery information for nerds like myself, excellent cocktail recipes, bar recommendations for anyone planning a trip, "dream bottles" with tasting notes for the well-heeled collector folk ... all in all very highly recommended across the board.

This is an excellent book and an indispensable reference for Japanese whisky enthusiasts. The best sections are Part 1 (a history of Japanese whisky) and Part 2 (Japanese distilleries present & past). Writing in a chatty, tongue-in-cheek style, the author weaves a narrative rich with personalities, vicissitudes of macroeconomics and fashion, and (mostly tragic) twists of fate. The reader gains an appreciation for the evolution of the industry and the relatively high quality of product today compared with past times. There is much original research here that is not available from reading the official promotional publications of the distilleries, nor from the many online whisky blogs. There's plenty of technical info here to keep the experts interested (still size, arm configuration, etc); for semi-novice readers like myself there is enough meaty "plot" on the bones to keep the pages turning. Like good Japanese whisky, the brilliance is in the balance. The book is beautifully illustrated in full color. The author has turned up some really neat archival material- old advertisements, bottles of defunct products, and so forth. Several of the charts and graphs (e.g. the ones showing the various Suntory single malts on a timeline, or the comprehensive list of Ichiro's Malts from Chichibu and Hanyu) will likely be valuable references for years to come.I have already purchased a second copy for a friend, and would highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in the subject.

The book arrived yesterday and I'm already 70 pages in. All of the details I've been wanting to know since my friend got me into Japanese whisky's a decade ago are now in front of me!The author starts with a brief explanation of the book's layout, what to expect through out, and why some readers may have questions about certain missing details (e.g. real distillers vs blenders, bottlers, etc). The book is logically laid out, written rather impartially, yet still in a very interesting and historical manner. I appreciate the logic so far. It would be really easy to drift all over the place on this topic, yet the writer has kept it reigned in and continues to hold my attention. The images of distillery locations, Japanese architecture and nature, and old whisky bottles which follow throughout the story in order, provide a great feel and just enough of a visual to carry you through the book.Definitely a great read so far, and a great addition for any friend to explore while they are sampling from my ever growing shelves of different whisky's.

This is a very informative book by a well respected writer and imbiber of Japanese whiskey. Stephan has put together an excellent read on the fairly modern history of whiskey in Japan. The book is both enlightening and entertaining, and carried a boatload of "a-ha!" moments for me. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about Japanese whiskey. This book has things for the geeks that want to know about mash-tuns and still arms at varies distilleries, to those that are looking for a primer on what how whiskey in Japan came to be what it is.

With the rise of foreign brands of whiskey coming into the country, I wanted to read about the different brewer in Japan and maybe travel their.

Make sure you read the description carefully, is not what I expected, but still really great.

Best buy!
